Be it known that I, WALTER J. BARRON, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kingsand State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paper feeding mechanism for t-ypewriting machines and has for itsp'rincipal object to provide improved releasing mechanism for releasing or throwing off from the platen the various paper feeding andcontrolling devices which cooperate therewith.
More specifically the object of my invention is to provide for throwing off or releasing at a single operation the main and secondary feed rollers, the paper deflector, the card guide of a typewriting machine such as the No. 10 Remington typewriter; and also to provide for the release of the devices aforesaid at a single operation without interfering with the usual releasing devices for the paper fingers which usual releasing devices operate eseparately and'independen'tly of each other and of the other devices aforesaid.
To the above and other ends my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. My invention is shown as applied to a.
machine generally resembling the No. 10
Remington typewriter but various features of said invention may be adapted to other. styles of writing machines.

The platen is equipped with paper controlling devices which are preferably of the construction found in the No. 10 Remington machine. Said devices comprise both a main feed roller composed of sections 7 mounted on a shaft 8 and coiiperate with the platen at the rear lower side thereof, and also a secondary feed roller comprising sections 9 mounted on a shaft 10 and cotiperating with the'platen at its-forward lower side. The shafts 8 and 10 bear in the opposite arms of rocking levers or carriers 11, there being two such levers one at each end of the platen. Each lever 11 is pivoted at 12 to the forwardly extending arm 13 ofa three-ar1ncd supporting lever, said supporting lever further comprising an upwardly extending arm 14 and a downwardly extending arm 15. Each three-armed lever is pivoted on a rod 16 which extends length wise of the machine and is secured near its ends to-an L-shaped bracketcomprising a forwardly wardly extending arm 18, the arm 17 terminating at its forward end in a downward extension 17' which is secured by a screw 19 to the cross bar 2 underlying the platen. The arm,15 of each supporting lever has secured to it one end of a draw spring 20, the

The main and secondary feed rollers and the paper fingers, it will be observed, are mounted on the platen frame or carrier and travel with the platen during its letter spaci'ng movements. The No. 10 Remington machine is further equipped with a relatively stationary paper controlling or guiding device or card guide 41 which comprisesdownwardly extending flexible arms42, said arms being secured by screws -13 to fixed to the shift rail 5. It will be seen that the device 11 remains stationary during the letter space movements of the platen, always ljearing the same relation with respect to the printing point. The device 41 is not my invent-ion and is not claimed per so by me.
As thus far described and as shown in the machine, the releasing of the feed rollers and paper deflector does not affect the paper fingers nor the card guide While onthe other hand the releasing of either paper finger30 does .not affect the other paper finger nor any of the paper controlling devices aforesaid. No provision is made in the machine for releasing the card'guide 41 other than by pulling it away by hand from the face of the platen. In practice it is sometimes desirable to simultaneously release all of the paper controlling devices .abovenamed so that a. free and unobstructed way'for the paper may be afforded all the way around the platen. By my invention I provide for simultaneously releasing all the paper controlling devices and this I accomplish without affecting the devices heretofore provided for separately releasing certain of said devices.

The releasing devices for the bar 45 comprises extensions or fingers 47 which curve rearward and downward from the ends of said bar 45. As shown in Fig. 1 the bar 45 extends at its ends-beyond the end plates 1 and the fingers 47 are outside vsaid end plates. The weight of the extensions tends normally to turn the bar 45 rearward but said bar is maintained in normal position by stop pins 48 which project laterally inward from the end plates 1 and cooperate with the rear sides of the ears 46. The ends of the fingers 47 are rounded and are adapted to be engaged by the forward end portion of releasing arms 49, of which there are two. Said arms are secured to the outer ends of the rock shaft 24 by screws 50. The releasing arms 49 are arranged outside the adjacent end plates 1 and extend downward and forward, being normally separated from their associate fingers 47 as shown in Fig.2.
When the release key 25 is pressed rearward, rocking the shaft 24 and releasing the feed rollers 7 and 9, the rock shaft 24 as it turns, rocks the releasing arms 49 upward and toward the end of its turning movement said arms are' brought, into contact with the fingers 47.- After such contact said arms 49 during further movement swing the fingers 47 upward and rock the releasing bar 45 forward on its pivot. The forward movement of the bar 45 bpings it into operative contact with the paper fingers 30 and card guide 41, said bar thus acting to release the paper fingers and pressure rolls 31 and to swing the card guide 41 to the released position shown in Fig. 3, the flexible fingers 42 yielding sufficiently to permit of this movement of the card guide. \Vhen pressure on the key 25 is released the card guide is re stored by the inherent spring of the arms 42, and the pressure rollers 31 are restored by the springs 38; while, of course, the main and secondary feed rollers and paper deflector are returned in the usual way.
It will be seen that by the use of my invention all the paper controlling devices including the main and secondary feed rollers, paper deflector or apron, paper fingers and card guide may be swung away from the platen or released at a single operation, thus providing a clear passage around the platen for the paper.
It will be observed further that by present invention 1 provide for automatically releasing the paper fingers simultaneously, the automaticmeans in the present instance comprising connections between the releasing bar 45.and therock shaft 24, said rock shaft being operative by the key 25 and vcarrying releasing devices for the main and secondary feed rollers, the main feed roller in the present instance being at the introductory side of the platen, that is, at the lower rear side thereof, while the secondary feed roller is arranged below the printing point and between the same and the main feed roller. The release key 25 also operates to turn the two rock shafts33 automatically to release the paper fingers and also operates to releaseautomatically the paper guiding device or card guide 41, the means by'which this automatic release is effected in the present instance being the releasing bar 45. It is further to be noted that the two rock shafts may be turned independently of eachother to release their associate paper fingers and that this independent turning of the rock shafts is also independent of the releasing bar 45 and of the releasing mechanism for the feed rollers.
., By my present invention I provide simple and effective means for completely freeing the platen from the various paper controlling and feeding devices which normally. cooperate with said platen; and said means have been applied to the machine in thepresent instance without interfering with the normal operation of the other devices with which the machine has been hitherto equipped.
Various changes may be made without de devices, and automatic means for releasing said paper fingers simultaneously.

In a typewrlt ng machlne, the combination of a platen, a feed roller, key controlled devices for releasing the same comprising a rock shaft; a paper finger adjustable lengthwise of said platen, a releasing bar for said paper finger extending transversely thereof and lengthwise of said platen, said paper finger being mounted independently of said bar, and means connected with said rock shaft for operating said releasing bar.

In a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a platen, a feed roller, key controlled devices for releasing the same comprising a rock shaft; a paper finger adjustable lengtlr wise of said platen, a pivoted releasing bar for releasing said paper finger, and 'anarm fiXed to said rock shaft and operative on said releasing'bar.

7. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a feed roller at the introductory side thereof, releasing means for said feed roller, a paper finger co operative with said platen at the front there of and adjustable lengthwise of said platen, a
