To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL HERBERT PETERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dunbar, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.

This invention relates to'a hat pin point protector, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a device that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a hat pin to prevent pedestrians and other persons from being injured by contacting with a hat pin.

Another object of this invention is to provide a device that can be mounted upon the pointed end of a pin to prevent the pin from becoming accidentally displaced or lost.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above type that is simple in construction, durable, susceptible to any desired ornamentation and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as applied to a hat pin. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the barrel 2 of the device. Fig. 5 is a plan of a blank from which the device is made, and F ig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the barrel 3 of the device showing the manner of fixing the rod 3 in place.

A hat pin point protector in accordance with this invention is made of two pieces of metal, one consisting of a rectangular blank 1 that is made of light and durable flexible metal. The blank 1 is rolled or bent to provide two barrels 2 and 3 that are in parallelism, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The barrels 2 and 3 have the outer ends thereof closed by a tongue 4: that is formed integral with one end of the blank 1, as best shown in Fig. 5.

Mounted in the barrel 3 is a rod 5 that protrudes from the barrel and has the end thereof bent to provide an eye 6 that is at right angles to said rod. The rod 5 is re tained in the barrel 3 by inwardlv projecting portions 7 of said barrel engaging in notches 8 provided therefor in the rod 5. The inwardly projecting portions 7 are formed, adjacent to the ends of the barrel, by depressing the wall of the barrel after the rod 5 has been placed therein.

The barrel 2, adjacent to the inner end thereof is provided with an inwardly projecting portion 9 similar to the portions 7 of the barrel 3.

The center of the eye 6 is slightly out of alinement with the longitudinal axis of the barrel 2, and when the pointed end of a hat pin 10 is inserted through the eye 6 into the barrel 2, the pointed end of the hat pin is slightly bent, as best shown in Fig. 2. The inwardly projecting portion 9 of the barrel 2 binds against the pointed end of the hat pin and the device is firmly retained upon the hat pin.

It is thought that the utility of the device will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

hat I claim is A hat pin point protecting device comprising parallel integral barrels having the outer ends thereof closed, a rod mounted in one of said barrels and having the end thereof provided with an eye slightly out of alinement with the longitudinal axis of the other barrel, said eye and said last mentioned barrel being adapted to receive the end of a hat pin, and means in connection with said barrels for retaining said first mentioned rod therein.
