Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, i915..
Application tiled December 7, 1912. Serial No. 735,435.
all whom/1f may concern.'
Be it known that I, SETI-i HoofrMAN, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident ci" Kingston, in the county of Caldwell and State oi" Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Buggy-VV hips, of which the following is a specification, reierence being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buggy Whips.
rllhe p imary object oi' my invention is to provide a buggy whip which will keep its form, and will not break or bend over at the tip. I
Another object is to provide a buggy whip with a spring steel filler, the surface of which is traversed by a spirally running groove within which the cover is iirmly held to hold the same against casual displacement.
fr further object is to provide a buggy whip of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and of a lasting and durable construction which will be pliable and include a grooved metal filler ending at the tip end in an eye and at the butt end in an outstanding flange.
`With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claim, it being turther understood that changes in the speciiic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings forming a part et this speciiication, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure l, shows a View with parts broken away oic a whip embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of Fig. l. F ig. 3, shows a sectional view of a portion of the whip.
A buggy whip unless some special provision is made to hold the same in shape will bend over at the tip owing to the eiiect ot the weather and use. In my present invention l provide a whip which will be pliable while at the same time retaining at all times its shape in that l provide the same with a spring steel filler.
ln the drawings the numeral l, indicates a tapering spring steel member which at the butt end has the outstanding'flange 2 and at the tapering end, ends in the eye 3. This member which has a smooth and polished surface when linished is traversed by a spirally running groove This groove not only makes the metal member light but provides a depression within which the whip covering 4 is held, thus preventing the cover slipping or becoming casually displaced upon the member as might be the result if no corrugation were provided. At its lower end the liange 2 protects the lower end of the covering while at the upper end, the covering ends adjacent to the eye 3, to which is secured a lash 5. Such a whip will absolutely keep its shape and owing to the tact that the member is made of spring steel, it will be sufficiently pliable so that the whip can be conveniently wielded without danger of breaking the same. The spiral groove m is of such a width that the weight oit the stock canbe nicely regulated in that the unnecessary metal is removed through the intermedium of the groove which can be wide and shallow or narrow and deep.
A whip constructed according to my invention is simple and both durable and etlicient in operation.
Having thus described my said invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A whip comprising a tapering member made of a single length of spring steel having an integral outstanding fiange at the butt end and an eye at the other end, said member being traversed from end to end by a spiral groove, in combination with a cover woven over said member and pressed into said spiral groove and secured therein and stopped against said flange and eye at its ends.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence ot two witnesses.
SETH HOOTMAN.
Witnesses:
