To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Pn'rnn LAUERMANN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a hatpin point protector, and the objects of my invention are to provide a guard that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a hatpin to prevent the end of the pin from injuring pedestrians or objects that accidentally contact with the pin, and to furnish a hatpin with a guard that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for preventing an accidental displacement of a hat pin relatively to a hat.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and ref erence will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is aside elevation of a hatpin provided with the protector, Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of the same, Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view of the protector as applied to 'the pointed end of a pin, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View of the same, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the protector.

The reference numeral 1 denotes a pin having an ornamental head 2 at one end thereof and the opposite end of the pin pointed or tapered, as at 3.

pointed end of the pin, said body is provided with a socket 5 having the open end thereof flared or enlarged, as at 6 to provide an easy entry for the pointed end of the pin. The socket '5 of the body 4 is intersected by a bore 7 in which is movably mounted a retaining member 8 having the outer end thereof rounded and protruding from the body 4, as at 9 and the inner end thereof reduced, as at 10. The retaining member 8 is provided with a longitudinal slot 11, and extending through said slot is a pin 12 that prevents accidental displacement of said member, said pin being driven into the body 4 adjacent to the socket 5. The slot 11 is of a suflicient length to receive the pointed end 3 of the pin 1 and to retain the end wall of said slot in frictional engagement with the pin 1, a coiled compression spring 13 is arranged in the bore 7 between the closed end thereof and the end of the member 8, the outer convolution of said compression spring encircling the reduced end 10 of the member 8.

The spring pressed member 8 engaging the pin 1 is adapted to retain the body 4 upon the end of the pin, and by pressing upon the outer end of the member 8, said member can be shifted sufficiently to release the pointed end of the pin 1 and permit of its withdrawal from the body 4.

It is thought that the utility and manner of manipulating the guard will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
