Be it known that I, FRANK BUMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Monessen, in the county of VVestmore- 5 land and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to pens, and more particularly to certain improvements in connection with the pen disclosed in my application for patent filed August 30th, 1911, Serial No. 646,805, and allowed December 29th, 1911.

Besides having the same objects in view as disclosed in my allowed application, the present invention aims to provide a pen guard that can be easily and quickly placed in position on various styles of pens, the guard being arranged in a manner that prevents its displacement.

My invention further aims to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pen holder, pen point and guard assembled for use, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a pen provided with the guard, Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, Fig. iis a plan of the pen, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the pen provided with the guard. Fig. 6 is a plan of a blank from which the guard is formed, Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view taken on the line VTT-VH of Fig. 2, Fig. 8 is a similar view taken on the line VIII-VIII of Fig. 2, and 9 is a similar view taken on the line IXIX of Fig. 2.

type, but it is to be understood that this pen can be of the stub or Spencerian type if so desired. The body of the pen, adjacent to the shank 2, has a circular depression 3 adapted to receive a writing fluid, as ordinary ink. The body of the pen is provided with sets of ribs 4 that are arranged longitudinally of the body adjacent to the side edges thereof. These sets of ribs are formed by depressing the body of the pen from the underneath side thereof, whereby the ribs 1 will project from the top of the pen body. The longitudinal edges of the body, intermediate the ribs 4, have notches 5 for a purpose that will hereinafter appear.

The body of the pen 1 is provided with a guard 6 that is semi-cylindrical with the forward end thereof tapered to provide a point 7 that extends above the writing point 8 of the pen 1. The guard 6 is made of a single piece of material, as illustrated in Fig. 6, and the point 7 thereof can be slitted, as at 9, if so desired. The longitudinal edges of the guard are adapted to engage the inner walls of the sets of ribs 4:, whereby the guard will be spaced from the body of the pen 1, as best shown in Fig. 8. The guard 6 has the rear end thereof notched, as at 10 and provided with depending flanges 11. These flanges rest upon the body of the pen 1, at the shank 2 thereof, as best illustrated in Fig. 5, and the notch 10 is in Patented Jan.14,1913.

The longitudinal edges of the guard 6 are provided with malleable lugs or straps 12 that are bent into the notches 5 of the pen body 1, as best illustrated in Fig. 7, said lugs or straps retaining the guard upon the pen. By reference to Figs. 5 and 9, it will be observed that the guard is spaced from the top of the pen body, consequently there is sufficient room for a fluid, which permits of the pen being used for a long period of time without the same being replenished.

What I claim is 1. A pen comprising a body having a shank adapted to. be fitted in a pen holder, said body having a writing point at the forward end thereof and a depression adjacent to said shank, sets of longitudinal ribs carried by said body adjacent to the edges thereof, the edges of said body having notches formed therein, a guard arranged above said body and having the longitudinal edges thereof engaging the inner edges of said ribs, and straps carried by said guard and engaging in the notches of said body.
