GAFF OR GRAPPLING HOOK.
APPLIOATION HLBD 1211.11, 1911.

VVILLIAM 1\T. lVI. ANDERSON, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
GAFF OR GRAPPLING-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Application filed February 11, 1911. Serial No. 608,119.
To aZZ wlzom z't may conccrn Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. M. AN- DnRsoN, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Graff or Grappling- Hook, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved gaif or grappling hook which is collapsible or capable of being folded into position in which the hooks are inturned beyond one end of the body so that the device can be *conveniently carried in that position without danger of catching on other articles or unfolded so as to be out-turned beyond the other end of the body when in position for use.
The main object of the invention is to provide a galf or grappling' hook of this Character and of simple and cheap construction and convenient and effective in operation.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and referring theretoz-Figure l is a perspcctive view of the device in open or operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device in closed or collapsed position. Fig. 3 is a section on line 083 .933 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a partial elevation of adjacent portions of the gaif hook device, and a pole or handle therefor, with a connecting ferrule in section.
The device comprises a body 1 which may be cylindrical in form and is provided at one end with means, such as an eye 2, for attachment to a line, and also, preferably, with means, such as a screw threaded portion 3, for attachment to a handle, as hereinafter set forth. Said body 1 is formed with a plurality of longitudinal grooves 4, said grooves, for example, being three in number in case three hooks are to be provided. -looks 5 of the usual form are provided with eyes G extending in the grooves 4: and pivoted therein by pins 7 eXtending through said eyes and secured in the body 1 in the center thereof so as to enable the hooks to be placed in open position beyond one end of the body or in closed position beyond the other end of the body. A removable plain collar or sleeve 8 is adapted to slide over the body 1 from either end and to engage with the shanks 5' of the hooks to hold the hooks in either open or closed posit-ion. The end portions of the grooves 4 are inclined outwardly to the surface of the body 1 at each end, as shown at 9, so that when the shanks of the hooks are turned toward either end they will rest' on the inclined end portions 9 of the grooves t of the body 1 at each end and will eXtend obliquely outward or at an angle to the axis of the body 1.
XNhen the device is to be used, the hooks 5 are turned to the position shown in F ig. l, their shanks resting against the inclined end portions of the grooves 4 in the body 1 and the hooks 5 therebeyond, and the sleeve S is slipped over the body 1 and over the shanks 5' of the hooks, the obliquity of these shanks or their inclination to the axis being comparatively slight, so that by forcibly pressing on the sleeve 8 it is caused to clamp or bind on the shanks and to engage tightly therew-ith and hold the hooks firmly in operative position.
7hen the device is to be collapsed or folded, the sleeve 8 is slipped ofi of the body 1, the hooks are folded back or reversed to the position shown in Fig. 2, their shanks engaging with the other ends of the grooves 4, and the hooks projecting therebeyond. The sleeve 8 is then slipped onto the body 1 in the opposite direct-ion to that in which it was engaged for the operative position of the device, the said sleeve engagng with the shanks 5' of the hooks to hold the hooks in collapsed or folded position.
The device may be used either with a line inserted through the eye 2, or with a handle or pole 10 provided with a ferrule 11, see Fig. 4, screwed onto the screw threaded portion 3 on the body 1. The device is, therefore, adaptable for use either as a line ora handle or grappling hook.
l/Vhat I claim is f A gaff or grappling hook comprising a body having longitudinal grooves, each groove having outwardly inclined end portions extending to each end of the body, pivot pins extending across the central portion of the grooves, folding hooks having eyes located in the grooves and through which the pivot pins are passed, and shanks adapted to fold against the outwardly inclined end portions of the grooves at one end of the body so that the hooks will extend therebeyond in closed position or be reversed so that the shanks will fold against the outwardly inclined end portions of the grooves at the other end of the body and the hooks extend therebeyond in open position, and a reinovable plan sleeve adapted to slide on the body for securng the hooks by their shanks in either their open or closed p0s tion.
In testmony Whereo7 I have hereunto Set Iny hand at Los Angeles, California, this 1th day of February 1911.
VILLIAM N. M. ANDERSON.
