To all whom it mayo 6a v i -'Be it known that I, PERCY M. BEARD,
" citizen'of the United States, residing at Harthereof,
dlnsburg, in the county of Breckinridge and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in, Curling-Irons, of which the followin' is a specification.
This invention re ates to new and useful devices'for curling hair and has for its object the provision ofa simple and practical device for this'purpose constructed with a removable heating core which is housed with in the cylinder to prevent its contact with the hair. 7 Another object of the invention is to provide a novelrconstruction of heating rod, which is provided with a handle hinged thereto in a manner to permit of its being suspended directly above the source of heat, the arrangement of the handle acting to balance the core in this position.
The invention further consists in the novel form of clamping jaw and the spring actuating meanstherefor, the latter being carried by the jaw and engaging the removable heating core to hold the latter in.position within the sleeve, in addition to providing the spring actuating means 'for the clamping aw.
The invention alsoprovides a thumb engaging element which is carried by the clamping jaw and positioned within convenient reach, this structure providing a convenient and efficient means for operating the jaw.

i In the form of-the invention illustrated, there is .providedla sleeve or housing 10, which is closed at one end and openat its opp'osite end. 'Pivotally secured upon the sleeve adjacent the open end there is shown at 11, a clamping member or jaw 12, the ears 13 of which extend upon each side of the sleeve 10 to provide for this pivotal connec- -tion[ The j a'w'12 is provided beyond the cars 13 with an extension 14, which is disposed at an obtuse angle to the said jaw; This extension is substantially semi-oircular in cross section and housed within this semi-circular portion is a fiat spring 15, one end of which is clamped in ears 16 bent inward upon the spring. The opposite end of the spring is formed into a loop 17 and is provided with a laterally extending terminal portion 18, which passes through a transversely disposed slot 19 provided in the sleeve 10. This construction keeps the clamping jaw normally seated against the sleeve. In order to provide for conveniently opening the jaw, the
The sleeve 10 is adapted to removably receive a straight rod or core 21, designed to be placed through a suitable source of heat until sufliciently hot for use. The core 21, is pivotally connected to a handle 22, the pivot being shown at 23. The bonnet or ca 24.- through which the pivot 23 passes, 1s formed with a spring tongue adapted to engage the end of the core 21 to hold the latter in position. The core 21 is provided with a transversely disposed notch 26, which when the said core is positioned within the core 10 will be engaged by the terminal portion 18 of the spring'15, to hold the rod in position and prevent its accidental displacement when the iron is in use. To disengage the core from the cylinder, the forgiven a half turn, so that the terminal portion 18 of the spring will be disengaged from the notch 26, when the core may be readily removed.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made without departure from the spirit or sacrifice of any of the advantages of the invention, for example'a handle 27 may be substituted for the thumb piece 20, this handle being secured to the clamping jaw by means- 25, which is of the pivot connection 28, which is similar in construction to the connection of the core 21 with the handle 22.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a curling iron, a sleeve, a removable core for said sleeve and a spring actuated clamping jaw pivoted to the latter, of a spring having one end secured to the clamping jaw and its opposite end bearing against the sleeve and extending within the latter for engagement with a notch in the removable core to hold the latter in position.
2. In a curling iron, the combination with a sleeve, a spring actuated clamping jaw pivoted to said sleeve, a substantially straight core adapted for insertion wlthin the sleeve,
Qopies of this patent nia-y beobtained for the combination with a handle pivotally secured to one end of the core and a spring for holding the handle adjusted with respect to the core.
3. A curling iron comprising in combination a sleeve, a spring actuated transversely curved jaw pivotally secured thereto, a handle pivotally secured to the jaw, resilient means carried by the handle for holding the latter in position, a removable core for said sleeve, a pivoted handle for said core, resilient means for holdingthe last mentioned handle in position and a spring, latch carried by the pivoted jaw and engageable with the core for removably holding the latter I within the sleeve. Y v t In testimony whereofI afiix my signatnre.
