PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented May *7, 1912.
Serial No. 674,479.
1 b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gronon Vans Hair- ILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Marylanchhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipes and has for its object to provide a mouthpiece for the purpose of preventing the saliva from themouth of the smoker from entering the stem of the pipe and also to prevent the nicotin from collecting in the stem of the pipe. The said mouthpiece being so constructed that it may readily be attached to any pipe stem and is removable tor the purpose of cleaning same.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the claims.
In' the accompanying drawing -l igure' i is aside elevation of a pipe showing my invention applied thereto, the removable mouthpiece being in section. Fig. 2 isa similar view; the mouthpiece being shownin full. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detailed views of the disk contained in the mouthpiece.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, 1 designates a pipe having a stem 2, which latter may be of any suitable construction. Removably ,fitted over the end ,of the stem 2 is a cap 3 preferably of soft rubber, but which maybe of any suitable material, and provided in its lowerside with one or more apertures 4 through which the smoke is drawn by the smoker. Within theicap is a disk 5 having a hollow stem o pro ectlng upwardly to near the upper inner surface of the said cap, and through which the smoke is drawn from thepipc. The cap 3 is provided, in the present instance, with an annular recess 7 just back of the open1ng8 into which the rim or flange 9 of the pipe stem fits to hold the cap 3 securely in position. The disk 0 also fits into an annular recess 10 in the cap 3 near the end of the pipe stem 2, The cap 3 projects mtothe mouth of the smoker and the smoke is Application filed January 31, 1912.
drawn through the stem 2 and through the disk 5 and stem 6 and passes out through the aperture 4 to the mouth of the smoker. Any saliva which may pass through the aperture 4 into the cap 3 will be prevented from entering the pipe stem 2 owing to the stem 6 which projects upwardly to near the upper inner surface of the said cap 3. And the saliva which may collect in the cap 3 will drain out through the aperture 4: when thepipe is removed from the mouth of the smoker.
The cap 8 may be removed when it is desired to clean same, and being preferably made of soft or pliable rubber will fit any pipe stem, thus avoiding the necessity of a specially constructed pipe stem.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim is: I i
1. A mouthpiece for pipes comprising a cap having an opening through which the pipe stem projects and an aperture in its lower side, and a disk within the said cap having an opening therein and a hollow stem projecting upwardly from said disk.
2. A. mouthpiece for pipes comprising a cap having an opening through whichthe pipe stem projects, an annular recess just back of said opening into which the rim or flange ot the pipe stem fits, and an aperture in its lower side, and a disk within said up having an aperture therein and a hollow stem projecting upwardly from said aperture in said disk. 1 i 3. A mouthpiece for pipes comprising :1 cap having an opening through which the pipe stem projects and an annular recess just back of said opening into which the rim or flange of the pipe stem fits, and anaperture in its lower side, a disk within said cap just back of said pipe stem and pro- 'vided with a hollow stem projecting upwardly to near the upper inner surface of said cap. f
In testimony whereof I aitix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
