PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ELKIN, JR, OF JERSEY CITY, NEl/V JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO MARGARET ROSS ELKIN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
MOUTHPIECE FOR PIPES'OR CIGAR-HOLDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,804, dated. August 16, 1904. 7
Application filed March 29, 1904. Serial No. 200,518, (No model.)
To all 10700177, it may concern:
Be it known that 1. CHARLES ELKIN, r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of such construction as to protect the tongue of the smoker from direct contact with hot smoke, as also to provide a removable receptacle to hold the nicotin and which may be readily taken off for cleaning, and at the same time to provide a saliva-guard which will prevent direct entrance of saliva from the mouth of the smoker into the main stem or tube of the pipe, and thus avoid clogging of the said main stem or tube.
- To this end the invention comprises a cap removably fitted to the mouthpiece of the pipe or cigar-holder and which cap is provided at its upper side only with an orifice or orifices for the escape of the smoke, such position of the orifice or orifices preventing hot smoke from coming into direct or immediate contact with the tongue of the smoker. The tip of the stem is preferably somewhat tapered, so as to be of less diameter vertically than the chamber of the cap, thereby affording below the extreme end of the stem a small chamber which will hold any nicotin which may be drawn through the stem and which chamber can be easily cleaned when the cap is removed from the pipe. The stem is preferably provided with a small peripheral flangeto serve as a guard against the teeth of the smoker, and thereby render the pipe or cigar-holder more easily and safely held in the mouth, and forward of said guard the stem is preferably provided at its upper side with asmall orifice or port for the entrance of air to cool the smoke somewhat, if desired, but which orifice or port may be covered by the lip of the smoker at pleasure, thereby alternating or varying the smoking process so as to enhance its pleasure.
.the cap and below the tip a small recess or In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is 5 a partial sectional view of a pipe constructed in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 a similar view showing a slightly different form of the invention from that represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates the invention as applied to a mouthpiece of a cigarholder.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a pipe. which may be of any suitable shape or size and which is furnished with a stem 13, provided near its upper end with a rigid peripheral or exterior rib or flange 1A, outside of which the teeth of the smoker may close, and which rib or flange will therefore serve as a guard to enable the smoker to retain the pipe 5 more securely in the mouth. Removably fitted to the tip 15 of the stem is a cap 16, provided on its partly-closed upper, side with one or more orifices 17 for the escape of smoke into the mouth of the smoker, but which orifice or orifices being located on the upper side of the cap will prevent the hot smoke from coming in direct or immediate contact with the tongue of the smoker.
The cap 16 may be of any suitable substance. as hard rubber, ivory, bone, silver, or other metal, and may be partly screw-threaded interiorly, as shown in Fig. 1, to fit a screw- 9O chamber which will serve as a trap to hold any nicotin which may be drawn through the stem. 7
The stem 13 is preferably provided on its upper side just forward of the flange or guard 14 with a small port or orifice 18, which when uncovered permits a small quantity of air to be drawn into the tube of. the pipe, and thus slightly cool the smoke, and which port or orifice is so located that it may be covered by the lip of the smoker at pleasure to vary the smoking operation as may be desired.
Fig. 3 represents a mouthpiece or holder 19 for cigars embodying the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the removable cap 16 having a smoke eXit or exits only at its partly-closed upper side, but closed at its end and lower sides, will effectively guard or protect the tongue of the smoker from direct contact with hot smoke and will also serve as a trap to hold any nicotin which may be drawn through the pipestem, and thus prevent it from entering the mouth of the smoker. Also the said cap will serve as aguard to prevent the direct entrance of saliva from the mouth of the smoker into the main tube or stem of the pipe to the detrimental clogging of the same.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A mouthpiece for a pipe or cigar-holder comprising a stem provided with an integral tapered tip, combined with a removable cap fitted to said tip and closed at its end and lower side, and partly closed, but having a smoke-exit oriiice or orifices, at its upper side,
the inner end of said tip being of a lesser diameter vertically than the chamber of said cap so as to adapt said chamber to serve as a nicotin trap or receptacle.
2,. A mouthpiece for apipe or cigar-holder comprising a stem providednear its end with an exterior rib or flange and with a tip, integral with said stem, beyond said rib or flange, combined with a cap removably fitted to said tip and closed at its end and lower side and partly closed, but having a smoke-exit opening or openings, at its upper side.
3. A mouthpiece for a pipe or cigar-holder comprising a stem provided near its end with an exterior rib or flange and with a tip, integral with said stem, beyond said rib or flange, combined with a cap removably fitted to. said tip and closed at its end and lower side and partly closed, but having a smoke-exit opening or openings, at its upper side, said stem being also provided in its upper side, forward of and adjacent to said rib or flange, with an airinlet hole or port.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ELKIN, J R.
