To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PETER FAUCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Painesdale, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Knife, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in tobacco knives, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a device for cutting plug or leaf tobacco into strips or sheets, the outfit being an individual outt for the smoker so that he may cut the tobacco as needed and into strips or cuts of varying thicknesses according to his desire.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an individual tobacco cutting outfit, provided with a shelf to properly support the plug tobacco adjacent a cutting aperture in a vertically disposed plate, said vertically disposed plate coacting with a parallel and vertically disposed plate to provide a space for receiving a reciprocatory knife, the last mentioned vertically disposed plate being provided with an aperture below the aperture of the first plate to permit the sliced tobacco to be projected between the respective plates and through said slot into a receptacle.
A still further obj ect of the present invention is the provision of a pair of vertically disposed knife guides or plates provided with slots, the wall of one of said slots forming a knife edge and permitting the tobacco plug to be projected therethrough while the other plates limit the cut of tobacco and guides the cut at a lower level into a receptacle.
With the foregoing and other objects in v view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tobacco knife taken from the feed side thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 3 showing' a modified form of knife.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base, whichy has connected thereto and uprisincr therefrom the two vertically disposed and spaced plates 2 and 3 respectively, the plate 2 being provided with the right angled lower end 4 secured by bolts 5 to the base 1, while the lower straight edge 6 of the plate 3 is fitted within a slot 7 of the base 1, the spacing strips 8 and 9 being disposed between said plates and held in proper position so as to provide a space 10 between the plates by the respective bolts 11 and 12. This plate 10 may be varied by introducing various width plates 8 and 9, and, as will presently appear, will provide a means for adjusting the space l() so that l various thicknesses of cuts of tobacco may be obtained.
The vertically disposedv plate 2 is provided with the tobacco receiving aperture 13, the lower edge 14 of which is a cutting edge and so disposed as to coact with the cutting edge 15 of the pivoted and vertically swinging knife 16, which is pivoted at the upper ends of the respective standards 17 carried by the base 1, while at the other end thereof is mounted a handle 18, whereby the knife may be properly manipulated to cut the tobacco projected through the aperture 13 of the plate 2, so that the said tobacco will abut the inner face of the plate 3, the width of the cut being limited by the space 10 as herebefore stated.
Provided in the plate 3 below the aperture 13 of the plate 2 is an aperture or eXit opening 19, provided with the lower inclined guiding edge 20, the said aperture 19 being in alinement with the aperture 24 in the rear wall of the cut tobacco receptacle 25, which is provided with a removable cover 26.
In order to properly square or line the plug of tobacco with the aperture 13 during the cutting operation, a shelf or support 21 having the standards 22 and 23 is connected to the base as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the upper face of said platform or support 21 being so disposed as to permit the operator to hold the plug tobacco thereupon and project the end to be cut through the aperture 13 and against the inner face of the plate 3. When in this position the knife 16 is pushed downwardly upon, to out the tobacco, the portion severed therefrom being forced through the space 10 down to and through the apertures 19 and 24 into the receptacle 25.
In the form heretoforeV described, the
blade or knife 16 is an integral piece, but as Shown in Fig. 4 the shank 16 of the knife has connected thereto, a strip 27, which may be removed according to space between the plates 2 and 3. By this constructionvarious cuts of tobacco may be made.
What is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described, having a base, two vertically disposed and parallel plates carried thereby, one of said .plates being provided with an aperture having its lower edge straight and forming a cutting edge, the other plate being provided with a similarly shaped aperture the'upper edge of which is below the lower edge of the aperture of the first plate, a reciprocatory knife disposed between said plates and having a cutting edge to coact with the cutting edge of the aperture of one of said plates, a guiding support for the object to be cut disposed to present the object through the aperture having the cutting edge, and a Y receptacle disposed to receive the cuttings from the aperture of the last mentioned plate, said receptacle being provided with an aperture to aline with the aperture through which the cuttings pass.
2. A device for forming cut plug tobacco, having a base, two vertically disposed plates carried thereby, means for adjustably spacing said plates, one of'said plates being provided with a rectangular slot the lower edge of which is a cutting edge, while the other plate is provided with a similar shaped slot the upper edge of which is below the cutting edge of the aperture of the first plate, and a blade mounted for sliding movement within the space between the said plates and having a cutting edge to coact with the knife edge of the first mentioned aperture.
3. A device for forming cut plug tobacco, having a base, two vertically disposed plates carried thereby, means for adjustably spacing said plates, one of Said plates being provided with a rectangular slot the lower end of which is a cutting edge, while the other plate is provided with a similar shaped slot the upper edge of which is below the cutting edge of the aperture of the first plate, a blade mounted for sliding movement within the space between said plates and having a cutting edge to coact with the knife edge of the first mentioned aperture, and a guiding support for the object to be cut disposed to present the object through the aperture having the cutting edge.
4. A device for forming cut plug tobacco, having a base, two vertically disposed plates carried thereby, means for adjustably spacing said plates, one of said plates being provided with a rectangular slot the lower edge of which is a cutting edge, while the other plate is provided with a similar shaped slot the upper edge of which is below the -cutting edge of the aperture of the first plate, a blade mounted for sliding movement within the space between said plates and having a cutting edge to coact with the knife edge of the first mentioned aperture, a guiding support for the object to be cut disposed to present the object through the aperture having the cutting edge, and a receptacle disposed to receive the cuttings from the aperture of the last mentioned plate.
5. A device for forming cut plug tobacco, having a base, two vertically disposed plates carried thereby, means for adjustably spacing said plates, one of said plates being provided with a rectangular slot the lower edge of which is a cutting edge, while the other plate is provided with a similar shaped slot the upper edge of which is below the cutting edge of the aperture of the first plate, a blade mounted for sliding movement within the space between said plates and having a cutting edge to coact with the knife edge of the first mentioned aperture, a guiding support for the object to be cut disposed to present the object through the aperture having the cutting edge, and a receptacle disposed'to receive the cuttings from the aperture of the last mentioned plate, said receptacle being provided with an aperture to aline with the aperture through which the cuttings pass.
