JOSEPH MELERSKI, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SLICER.
Application filed February 28, 1919. Serial No.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH MELERsKi, a citizen of Poland, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan,
have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Slicers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in culinary apparatus, and particularly. to types adapted to slice vegetables preliminary to their cooking.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive and easily operated apparatus in which vegetables, such as potatoes, onions, carrots, and the like may be cut into slices of uniform thickness in an easy and expeditious manner, and without danger of the hands of the operator coming in contact with the cutting knives.
A further object is to provide means whereby the thickness of the slice may be adjustably arranged to suit individual purposes. l
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the center of a slicer made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the adjustable guide by which the thickness of the slices may be graded, and
Fig. 4 is a'transverse sectional view taken through an interior corner adjacent to the guard element.
The apparatus, which is substantially rectangular in plan, is comprised of a pair of side walls 10, joined at the back by a rigid cross piece 11, the same resting upon a partial flooring 12.
Extending to the front is a thin metallic plate 14, having a sharp cutting edge 15, the same being substantially level with the upper surface of the rear cross plate 12.
The inner surface of the side elements 10, contain longitudinal slots 16, receivable of tenons 17, extending laterally out from the sides of a square container or box 18, en-

20, so that the box b Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
tirely open at the top and also at the bottom, except for inner extending ledges 19, upon which normally rests a plate 20, the same being slidable within the interior of the box 18, and provided with a vertical extending stem 22, having an enlarged operating handle or knob 23, at the extreme upper end by which the plate 20, may be raised, permitting vegetables to be placed therein.
The vegetables slide over the upper surf ace of the cutter plate 14, and past the cutting edge 1 5, whereupon they will drop by gravity, assisted by pressure upon the plate eing moved toward the rear of the machine, slices will be cut from the vegetables.
The thickness of the slices depend upon the position of a front plate 25, having an upstanding transverse guard 26 at its front, forming a barrier which operates in the manner of a handle in retracting the plate 25, which can be accomplished by slackening the thumb 'screws 27, engaged upon the outer extending ends of screw threaded bolts 27, operative in slots 28, the bolt heads 29 being set in triangular recesses 30, formed in the partial flooring 25, filler pieces 31 being so fitted as to surround the bolt stems 27 and form a substantially unbroken level top to the plate 25.
Thus, it is possible to retract the plate 25,
according to the length of the slots 28. and also to tip or incline the same upon the bolts so that the cutter 15, which always remains stationary, is at a desired adjusted distance relative to the plate 25. In operation, the plate 25 having been adjusted so that proper thickness of the slices may be sheared by the cutter 15, the article to be sliced is placed in the receiver or box 18, the pressure plate 20 placed thereon and by grasping the upper portion of the box, together with knob 23, the same is moved rectilinearly, reciprocatively between the side walls 10, the vegetables below the pressure plate 20, dropping by the applied pressure and gravity upon the upper surface of the plate 25, and brought into contact with the shearing cutter 15,` so that slices of the saine pass out through the opening 32, extending between the sides 10 under the cutter 15.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a neat, effective and absolutely safe device has been presented whereby Vegetables are cut any desired thickness in a rapid and eli'eetive manner.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a Slicer of the character described, a means for grading the thickness of the slices, comprising an inclinable plate having trif angular recesses, screw-threaded bolts having their heads set in the triangular reeesses of said plate, filler lpieces surrounding the stems of said bolts in said.. recesses, and thumb screws engaged upon the outer extending ends of said screwthreaded bolts, 'for permitting the withdrawal of said inclinable plate whereby the distance between its upper surface and the edgeof said cutter may be adjusted.
In testimony whereof, I, have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of Feb. 1919.
JOSEPH MELERSKI.
