UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK A. GOODYKOONTZ AND JEFFERSON I2. B-YRNE, OF SAPULPA', OKLAHOMA.
VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters I atent.
' Patented June-22,1909:
application filed January 11, 1909. Serial No. 471,707.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, FRANK. A. GooDY- KOONTZ and JEFFERSON L. BYRNE, citizens of the United States, residing at Sapulpa, in the county of Greek and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-Cutters; and we:
do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the cutting plates. Fig. 4 is a view of a casing adapted to surround a portion of the cutter and hold the potato in position while being cut, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the plunger showing the grooves in which one set of plates is adapted to seat.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a standard having a laterally projecting arm A apertured at A for the reception of the plunger stem B, having a plunger B fixed to its lower end. The under surface of said plunger is provided with a series of parallel; grooves C extending a depth equal tothe width of the knives which will be herein after described A second arm D projects from the top of the standard and is provided with an aperture D for the reception of the stem B. Said standard is provided with "an elongated slot E and E is a pin passing through the walls of said slot and upon which a link F is pivotally mounted. A handle is provided with a slot H to rest upon the flange K of the rack.
through which the stem B. passes, and I- designates a pin passing through the walls of the slot H and also through said stem; B at one end and said lever H is pivotally connected tothe link F. By the provision.
- of said. lever, the plunger and. stem may be raised and lowered.
Projecting from the standard is a'rack K having flanges K about three of its marginal edges, and J designates a frame having a series of knives L resting in slots L formed in the marginal edges of the frame. Said. frame is adapted to rest upon the top of said rack K in the manner shown in the drawings, and O designates a second frame which .is similar in construction to the frame J and having knives Q; seated. in slots Q formed in the marginal edge thereof. Plates S are fastened to the under faces of each of'said frames and serve to hold the knives in place. The two frames are of the same size and are adapted to be positioned one upon the other when it is desired to cut the potatoes into squares, in which arrangement the knives of each set will be arranged in right angles to each other. The area of said plunger is of such a size as to fit within the inner marginal ed es of the frames and the slots C formed in the under surface of said plunger are adapted to receive one set of knlves 1n the superimposed frame, so that the potato or other article being cut may be pushed by the plunger down to the knives in the lower frame;
An inclosin casin designated by letter R, is prov-idef with anges R at its lower end and adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the upper frame and has a hinged side R also rovided with a flange P and fastened to said hinged side isa curved wlre handle S and. S curved Wire handle which is secured to one of the sides of the casing. Said fian e P is bent as shown in the drawings and adapted to have an outwardly extending porstlo a1 hinged side has a flanged edge T adapted to engage a slot T formed in the edge of the wall of the casing so that the operator, by gripping the two handles, may hold the plunger is being operated to cut thepotatoes or other articles. Projecting from one of the flanges of said casing are the fingers W which rest upon the upper edge of the frame.
designates a similar casing securely locked together while the andspaced apart, the frames are adapted to be used singly in the event of it being desired to cut the potatoes into strips or together if desired to cut them into squares,
although the shapes of the knives and the manner of mounting the same may be varied if-desired in order to cut the potatoes in different shaped pieces.
In operation, the lever is raised and with it the plunger, thepotato inserted within the casing and the door or hinged side closed and, y a downward throw of the lever, the potato is forced between the knives, cuttin the same into the pro er shapes desire The spring M which is astened to the lever and to an arm of said standard will serve to raise the plunger after having been depressed.
What we claim to be new is p A vegetable slicing apparatus comprising about three of the marginal edges of the top thereof, a knife-carrying frame adapted to rest upon said rack and held by said flanges from lateral movements, a lunger, an article holding casin extending flanges upon file bottom thereof adapted to rest upon said frame, a hinged door having an n 'wardly and outwar projecting from said casing near the bottom thereof and resting upon the upper edge of the knife frame, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiixo our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
