To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTONY SZABADOS, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New Michel, Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to umbrellas, more particularly to the umbrella stick and has for its object to provide an umbrella with an extensible and contractible stick when the length of the stick can be increased or diminished when occasion so requires.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a folding umbrella which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended. In the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of an umbrella in accordance with this invention and also showing the stick partly in section, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the stick in a telescopic position, Figs. 3 and 3 are details illustrating the spreader, Figs. 4, 4 and 4 are details illustrating the inner rib section, and Figs. 5 and 5 are details illustrating the outer rib section.

1 denotes the umbrella canopy which is connected at its top to the upper section of the stick, the latter being formed of the sections 3, 4 and 5. The section 5 is what is termed the handle section and has its lower end formed with a handle 6. The upper end of the section 5 has a bulb-shaped enlargement 7 and directly below said enlargement is formed with a circumferentially-extending slot 8. The section 4 is adapted to telescope in the section 5 and has arranged therein at its lower end a spring Specification of Letters Patent.

controlled catch 9 formed with a nose 10 and a lug 11, the latter is adapted to extend through the slot 8 when the section 4 is extended with respect to the section 5 while the former is adapted to project through a longitudinal slot 12 formed in the section 4 and engage the inner face of the enlargement 7 when the section 4 is extended with respect to the section 3. The lug 11 not only couples the section 4 to the section 5 when the former is extended with respect to the latter, but further constitutes a means whereby the spring controlled catch oan be shifted inwardly so that the section 4 can be moved downwardly into the section 5, or in other words telescope with respect to the section 5. The lug 11 is positioned at the free end of the catch 9 and includes a spring memher having one end fixed to the inner face of the section 4 and its other end provided with the lug 11. The nose 10 projects from the spring member at a point removed from the lug 11. A portion of the length of the spring member is bow-shaped to increase the resiliency thereof. The upper end of the section 4 is provided with a bulb enlargement and a slot 8 in the same manner as the section 15, like reference characters being used.

The section 3 is adapted to telescope in the section 4 and the lower end of the section 3 is provided with a spring catch and slotted in the same manner as the lower end of the section 4, like reference characters being employed. The section 3 intermediate its ends is provided with a transversely-extending slot 13 and a longitudinally-extending slot 14. Within the section 3 intermediate its ends is arranged a spring-controlled catch 15 provided with a nose 16 and a lug 17. Mounted upon the section 3 is a runner formed with a bulb enlargement 18 and a series of apertured ears 19. The runner is furthermore provided with a transversely extending slot 20 directly above the enlargement 18 and the lug 17 is adapted to extend through said slot 20 thereby maintaining the runner in an elevated position when the umbrella is open. The nose 16 is adapted to extend through the slot 14 into the enlargement 18 and further assists in maintaining the umbrella in an open position.

Pivotally connected to the apertured ears 19 are the spreaders 21. Pivotally connected to the notch of the upper ends are the inner rib sections 23. The outer ends of the inner rib sections 23 and the upper ends of the outer rib sections 24 are pivotally connected as at 25 to the outer ends of the spreaders.

The noses 10 of the spring-controlled catches when the sections 3 and 4 are extended, project into the bulb enlargement 7 and assists the lugs 11 in maintaining the stick in an extended position. By shifting the lugs 11 inwardly, the noses 10 will also be carried inwardly and the sections 3, 4 can telescope with respect to each other thereby reducing the length of the umbrella stick.

\Vhat I claim is:

An umbrella stick formed of upper, lower and intermediate telescopic sections, said lower and said intermediate sections each having its upper end provided with a hollow spherical enlargement and a circumferentially-extending slot directly below the enlargement, said intermediate section and said upper section in proximity to its lower end provided with a pair of slots, one of the slots of each pair extending circumferentially and the other longitudinally, a

Copies of this patent may be obtained for spring-controlled catch mounted in the lower end of said upper and said intermediate sections, each of said spring-"controlled catches consisting of a resilient member fixedly secured at its upper end in position having its lower end provided with a lug and further having at a point removed from said lug a nose having a curved gripping edge, each of said members having that portion between the nose and its secured end bow-shaped, said lugs when the intermediate and upper sections are extended projecting through said circumferentially-extending slots and said noses projecting through said longitudinal slots and engaging the inner faces of said enlargement thereby in connection with the lugs maintaining the intermediate and upper sections extended.
