FRICK F. WHITE, OF LIGONIER, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 14, 1910.
Application filed June 7, 1909. Serial No. 500,597.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRICK F. VVi-Irrn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ligonier, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding umbrellas, and the objects of my invention are, to
'provide an umbrella that can be readily reduced in its longitudinal dimensions so that it can be placed in a comparatively small receptacle, such as a hand-bag, or the pocket of a coat; to afford means for quickly restoring the parts to their extended or open position; to furnish means for rigidly securing the parts of the umbrella against accidental collapse when so expanded; to provide a sim le mechanism for accomplishing the desire results; and to supply movable parts having the desired strength, rigidity, durability and so related as to be readily assembled and repaired.
I attain the above objects by the mechanical construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form part of this specication, and in which,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of an umbrella, partly broken away and partly in section, showing the umbrella in an expanded or open position, Fig. 2 is a similar' view of the umbrella in a folded or collapsed position, Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the umbrella illustrating a portion of the telescope ribs and the spreader thereof, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the same, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the umbrella stick.
In the drawings 1 and 2 denote foldable sections constituting the umbrella stick, these sections being preferably made of metal. The confronting ends of the sections 1 and 2 are reduced to form lugs 3 and pivotally connected to said lugs by pins 4 is a coupling piece 5 of a diameter equivalent to the diameter of either of the sections 1 or 2. 6 denotes a sleeve having reduced ends 7, said sleeve being movably mounted upon said sections, preferably the section 1 whereby said sleeve can be moved over the coupling piece 5 to engage the confronting ends of the sections 1 and 2 and provide a rigid and non-collapsible connectionl between the stick sections, while the umbrella is maintained in an opened or expanded position. 'Io prevent the sleeve 6 from sliding onto the section 2, said section is provided with a resilient catch or detent 8 adjacent to the upper end of said sect-ion.
9 designates a handle carried by the lower end of the section 2, and 10 a notched collar carried by the up er end of the section 1. The upper end ofp this section is provided with a threaded shank 11, which is surrounded by the collar 10 which is retained in position by a cap 12 screwed upon the shank 11 and serving functionally as a tip.
13 designates an upper rib section and 14 a lower rib section, the latter being telescoped by the former when the umbrella is in a folded or collapsed position. The upper rib section 13 is pivotally connected, as at 15, to the collar 10, and said rib section is tubular and provided with a longitudinal slot 16 extending from one end thereof to the other upon the under side of said rib section. The outer end of the rib section 13 is partially closed, as at 17, but admits the upper end of the outer rib section 14. The upper end of the rib section 14 is bifurcated, and provided with a revoluble roller 18 of a greater width than the slots 16 of the upper rib section 13, whereby the upper end of the rib section 14 can be easily moved in the rib section 13.
19 designates a collar carried by the rib section 14 adjacent to the upper end thereof, said collar having a bifurcated extension 2O extending through the slot 16 of the rib section 13, and pivotally mounted in said bifurcated extension by a pin 21 is the upper end of a spreader 22 which is pivotally connected, as at 23, to a runner 24 movably mounted upon the umbrella stick. This runner is of a suicient diameter to clear the sleeve 6, whereby the umbrella can be closed without necessarily folding the same, and to hold the runner in position to maintain the umbrella in a closed or open position, the stick sections are provided with catches or detents 25 of the ordinary and well known type.
It is thought that in view of the showing in Fig. 2 of the drawings that the manner of folding the umbrella will be fully understood, that it will be observed that the upper rib section telescopes the lower ribbed section and that these sections together with the spreader 22 assume a position approxillO mately parallel with the stick section l, while the stick' section 2 folds upwardly and forms a compact and small parcel in connection with the remainder of the umbrella.
It will of course be understood that a suitable cover is attached to the collar l0, and the ribs of the umbrella.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
l. In a folding umbrella7 an upper tubular rib section provided in its lower portion with a longitudinally-eXtending slot, an outer rib section extending and shiftable in the upper section and having that end which is arranged within the upper section provided with a roller, a collar carried by the outer rib section and arranged within said upper rib section and formed with an eX- tension projecting through the slot of the 2. In a folding umbrella7 an upper tubular rib section provided in its lower portion with a longitudinally-extending slot, an outer rib section extending and shiftablein .the upper section and having that end which is arranged within the upper section provided with .a roller, a collar carried by the outer rib section and arranged within said upper rib section and formed with an extension projecting through the slot of the upper rib section, a stretcher pivoted at its outer end to said extension, a notched collar carried by the umbrella stick and to which said upper rib section is pivoted7 and a runner mounted on the stick and to which Vsaid stretcher is pivoted, said upper ribsection having its outer end provided with means to arrest the outward movement of the said collar carried by the outer rib section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
