FOLDING UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1912.
Application filed April 16, 1912. Serial No. 681,237.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Joznr TYMINsKI, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at West street, Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachit setts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding umbrel las and the primary object of my invention is to provide an umbrella that can be reduced approximately one-third its longitudinal dimension whereby it can be placed in a satchel or carried in a pocket.
A further object of this invention is to provide a folding umbrella consisting of a foldable stick and foldable ribs, both of which are inexpensive to manufacture, durable, and highly eflicient for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the umbrella stick, a fold-able rib thereof, and a spreader. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the pockets folded. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the ribs, and Fig. at is a plan of the same.
An umbrella stick in accordance with this invention comprises a tubular handle section 1, a tubular tip section 2, a detachable tip 3 and a detachable handle 4:. The detachable handle a has a screw threaded stem 5 that is screwed into the inner end of the handle section 1, and the outer end of the handle section 1 has a screw-threaded stem 6 screwed into the inner end of the tip section. The tip 3 has a screw-threaded stem 7 that is screwed into the outer end of the tube section 2.
Mounted upon the outer end of the tube section 2 is a notch S of the ordinary and well known type, and pivotally connected to said notch is an inner channel rib section 9. Adjacent to the outer end of a rib section 9 there is a sleeve connection 10 for a spreader 11 that has the inner end thereof pivotally connected to a notch 12 carried by a runner 13 slidably mounted upon the stick. The runner is locked relatively to the stick by the ordinary and well known type of notch 14L, carried by the tip section 2 and adapted to engage in a slot 15 provided therefor in the runner. The outer end of the rib section 9 terminates in two straps 16 having apertured heads 17. The straps 16 are pressed together with the heads 1.7 contacting. Engaging the outer sides of the heads 17 are the heads 18 of straps 19 carried by the in ner end of an outer rib section 20. Secured to the sections 9 and 20 adjacent to the straps thereof are clamps 21 having arms 22 provided with apertured heads 23 that engage the outer sides of the head 18, and all of said heads are connected by a pin or rivet 241. The outer rib section 20 can be easily folded relatively to the inner rib section 9 without injury to the cover carried by said sections.
To fold the umbrella, the runner 13 is shifted toward the notch 8 and then the outer rib section 20 is folded into parallelism with the inner rib section 9. The sections of the stick are separated and the umbrella can be easily placed in a poke, receptacle or pocket.
id hat I claim is:
A foldable umbrella including a stick, a notch attached thereto, a runner slidably mounted thereon, a rib formed of an inner and an outer section, a spreader pivotally connected to the runner and to the inner section inwardly of its outer end, said inner section pivotally connected with the notch, said inner section having its outer end provided with a pair of straps terminating in apertured heads, said outer section having its inner end provided with straps terminating in apertured heads between which is positioned the first mentioned heads, a pin extending through said heads for pivotally connecting them together, said pin having a head at each end, oppositely disposed arms mounted upon opposite ends of said pin and maintained in position by heads of the latter and oppositely extending clamps carried by said arms and engaging the rib sections.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
