Description

MYRON J. FERRE, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 88,024, dated March 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WELT-KNIFE.
*WQ-.h-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingpart of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known Vthat I, MYRON J. FERREN, of Stoneham,in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Welt- ,Knife`;. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to makeand use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in weltknives, designed to provide an adjustable cutter, which may be changed in its position as may be required, and also be readily removed, for sharpening, or other purposes.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved welt-knife; and
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I construct the stock of my improved knife in two parts, A and B, the parts A being provided with a shank for applying a handle, and the part B forming a clamping-jaw for holding the cutter by clamping it against the jaw A, and it is connected to the said jaw A by a set-screw, C, and a dowel-pin, E.
The rear end of the jaw B is bent, as represented at F, to hook over the cutter and confine the rear end down upon the dowel-pin. The front end of said cutter is held in position by being clamped tightly by the ends of the jaws.
The cutter G consists of a straight, or nearly straight bar of steel, preferably of rectangular form in crosssection, and is sharpened at the end, and adjusted, relaf tively to the stock, similarly to the cutter, or bit of a common wood-plane, and is clamped between the two parts of the stock, to secure it thereto, as is clearly shown.
The front ends of the clamping-jaws are curved outward, as shown in fig. 2, and the lower edges bevelled,
as represented in fig. l, to permit them to run closely into the angles formed by the seams.
vThe inner sides of the ends of the jaws are preferably -rcessed, so as to lap the edge of the cutter slightly, as shown at IH, to preventthe leather or any fibre thereof, or other substance of which the boots or shoes are formed, from crowding between the sides of the cutter and the jaws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the jaw A, of the clampingjaw B and cutter G, substantially as specified.
