Abstract

A liquid crystal display device comprises in sequence a first polarizing film, an optical compensation film consisting of a first phase difference region in contact with the first polarizing film and a second phase difference region in contact with the first phase difference region, a first substrate, a liquid crystal layer of liquid material and a second substrate, and when it is in black display the liquid crystal molecule of the liquid crystal material is aligned in parallel with the surface of a pair of the above substrates. The liquid crystal display device is made from a composition comprising a discotic liquid crystal compound having a substantially vertically aligned second phase difference region and having a retardation Rth of 20 nm to 120 nm in the thickness direction of the first phase difference region defined by Rth=((nx+ny)/2-nz)×d and the retardation Re of the in-plane of the first phase difference region defined by Re=(nx-ny)×d is 20 nm or less, wherein nx and ny (nx ≥ny) represent the refractive index of in-plane, the nz represents the refractive index of thickness direction, and d represents the thickness of the film, the slow axis of the second phase difference region is parallel to the transmittance axis of the first polarizing film and the orientation of the slow axis of the liquid crystal molecule when it is in black display.
