Abstract
In a first stage of the process, a first amount of silica is converted with carbon to form silicon carbide, in a second subsequent stage the second remaining amount of silica is converted with the silicon carbide produced in the first stage to form liquid silicon, heat energy being supplied during the two stages. The device comprises a plasma generator 3 situated at a low level in the reaction receptacle 1, with a means connected to the latter for introducing silica into a second reaction region formed by the plasma generator 3 at the low level, in a bed mainly consisting of silicon carbide which was produced in the first region, and also an outlet in the low part of the reaction receptacle for drawing off the silicon produced. <IMAGE>
