Abstract

A method of and an apparatus for obtaining better utilization of a fuel 1a, especially a solid fuel, in which the fuel is subjected to a primary combustion in a primary combustion chamber 1b and the primary flue gas with entrained particles of combustible material flows through a restricted outlet 1c into an after-combustion chamber 2. In the chamber 2 the particles are separated from the flue gas by a combination of sedimentation, resulting from the expansion of the flue gas into the larger flow cross section of the chamber 2, impingement-baffle separation and of direction-change separation, the two latter forms of separation being caused by impingement of the flue gas against a baffle 4 disposed above an outlet 3 to the chimney or stack. An inclined wall 6 in a dead space or flow shadow region in the chamber 2 serves to guide the collected particles back to a combustion region, at which a burner 7 is optionally provided. <IMAGE>
