Abstract

A liquid pump, particularly a water pump for an i.c. engine, comprises an impeller (4) rotatably mounted on a shaft (3) and sealed to the shaft (3) at the suction side by means of axial sealing means comprising a mating ring (12) fixed to the impeller (4), a sliding-contact ring (11) urged into sliding contact with the mating ring (12) by means of a spring (9) accommodated in an annular seal housing (8), and a bellows seal (10) arranged between the spring (9) and the shaft (3). There is at least one cooling passage (14) in the impeller, e.g. in the hub (4a) extending from the pressure side to the suction side substantially at the radially-outer periphery of the mating ring (12) for directing liquid from the pressure side towards the sliding contact ring (11) and the bellows seal (10) thereby cooling the axial seal and scavenging the seal area to remove gas. <IMAGE>
