Abstract

1496695 Carbon material with high bulk density and flexural strength KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 7 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974 14 March 1974] 5340/75 Heading C1A A solid carbon material having a bulk density of at least 1À9 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> and flexural strength of at least 900 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> is produced by a method which comprises the steps of preparing by heating a pitch at 300-550‹ C. to obtain a carbon material having the H/C ratio of from 0À35 to 0À57, from 2 to 15% by weight of matter soluble in quinoline, 80-93% by weight of fixed carbon and a degree of heat shrinkage (as defined) of at least 2%; pulverizing the precursor carbon material to an average particle size not greater than 10 Á; shaping the pulverized precursor carbon material into a desired article at room temperature; carbonizing it at a temperature of at least 1000‹ C., and graphitizing the carbonized article at a temperature of from 2000‹ to 3000‹ C.
