Abstract

1360920 Shaped carbon bodies SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT GmbH 27 April 1972 [26 June 1971 8 July 1971] 19720/72 Heading C1A A carbon body is obtained by shaping a mixture of (1) a powdered or chip form carbon containing solids component which can be transformed into carbon by heating in an inert atmosphere without passing through a liquid or plastics phase and (2) a carbon containing liquid synthetic resin which forms a solid infusible mass under the influence of heat or catalysts, then subjecting the shaped mass to carbonization in an inert atmosphere, the solids component and liquid synthetic resin both undergoing weight losses of from 40% to 60% during the carbonization. Preferably the solids component and the resin undergo the same loss in weight. The solid may comprise cellulose and is preferably sawdust. Alternatively the solid is a ground hardened synthetic resin, e.g. a phenolformaldehyde or a furan resin. The mixture may be of a texture such that it can be spread on a support to obtain the shaped mass. The shaped mass may be first hardened at a temp. of from 100‹ to 200‹ C. and is carbonized by heating at a temp. of from 800‹ to 1000‹ C., the rise in temp. of the mass in the range from 350‹ to 600‹ C. being from 3‹ to 4‹ C./hr. If desired before carbonization the shaped mass may be coated with a film of hardenable synthetic resin which is first hardened and carbonized with the mass, the resin being of a type which forms a vitreous carbon layer on carbonization and also suffers a weight loss of 40-60%. The shaped mass may be hardened before being coated with the resin which may be a phenol-formaldehyde or a furan resin, the coated film having a thickness of not more than 1 mm. If desired the shaped body may subsequently be graphitized.
