Abstract

1315368 Tungsten, carbide bodies E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 9 June 1970 [23 June 1969 (3) 27981/70 Headings C7A and C7D An alloy composition, suitable for metal cutting tool edges, with a density of over 98% theoretical, consists of tungsten carbide bound with 3-25% of an alloy consisting, apart from incidental impurities, of Co containing 5-25% W, wherein there are regions containing less than 8% W interspersed with regions containing more than 8% W. The preferred average grain diameter of the WC is less than 2 Á. The heterogeneity in the alloy may be caused by 1) using a mixture of WC powders one of which has too much C stoichiometrically and the other too little, 2) including C or W powder in the powder metallurgical mixture, or 3) slightly oxidizing the initial powder mixture. The powder mixture may be sintered and then hot pressed.
