Abstract
1379220 Sintered tungsten-based alloys OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AEROSPATIALES 21 Oct 1970 [28 Oct 1969] 50066/70 Heading C7D A tungsten-based alloy is made by sintering powdered tungsten mixed with a powdered metal binder consisting of 65-90% nickel, 5-20% chromium, and 5-15% phosphorus, the phosphorus being introduced as an alloy with one or both of the other constituents of the binder; the binder melts at the sintering temperature and may comprise 5-20 wt per cent of the mixture. To increase the hardness a small amount of carbide of Ti, Zr, or Ta may be added. A Ni-Cr-P alloy is crushed in ethylene glycol, dried, and mixed with tungsten powder and camphor as an agglomerant. The mixture is pressed e.g. isostatically into the form of cylinders, heated to remove the agglomerant, and sintered by heating at 950C in an atmosphere of hydrogen and fluorine.
