Abstract
1,257,492. Coating with metals. WHITTAKER CORP. April 1, 1969 [April 1, 1968], No. 17107/69. Heading C7B, C7F. Articles formed from at least one of Al, Be, Ti, Nb or Zr are metal-plated by immersion in a substantially water-free methanol solution of an inorganic halide of the plating metal, said solution being below its boiling-point. The plating metal is preferably below H in the electro-motive series; the preferred halide is a chloride; the metal may be Cu and may serve as a base for electro-plated Cr. Where the plating metal is above H in the electro-motive series, electrodes may be placed in the solution with the article electrically connected to the cathode and D.C. current passed through the solution to accelerate plating metal deposition; e.g. Ni may be deposited in this way using a nickel chloride-methanol solution and a Ni anode.
