Abstract

Anode, particularly for electrolysis of brine at high current densities, comprises a metal base coated with Pt containing 0.01-0.1% by weight Bi. The coating may be electrodeposited from an aqueous solution of chloroplatinic acid, a soluble Bi compound and hydrochloric acid in which the Pi:Pt ratio is 0.2 to 2.5% The metal base may be Ni, Au, Ta, W or Mo but preferably is Ti or Ag and the coating may be from 25-250 microinches thick and of a uniform matt dark grey adherent character. Reference is also made to a brine electrolysis anode having a coating of platinum containing Sb as having poor overvoltage characteristics.
