Abstract
804,814. Electroplating with titanium, zirconium, or their alloys. GOLDENBERG, L. March 1, 1955 [March 8, 1954], No. 6018/55. Class 41. Metals are electroplated with titanium, zirconium, or alloys thereof by passing D.C. at a plating cathode current density up to 200 amps./sq. ft. through a cell comprising an anode made predominantly of the metal being deposited and having an oxygen content of not more than 10 per cent, a magnesium halide electrolyte having a stability at plating temperature such that there is less than 2 mols. per cent dissociation into the free metal, said electrolyte containing less than 1 per cent oxygen, and a cathode made of the metal to be plated upon, an inert atmosphere, e.g. of argon or helium, being maintained above the cell bath. Typically the electrolyte is magnesium chloride and the cell temperature is maintained above the alpha-beta transformation point of the metal deposited. The cell bath may contain initially a minor proportion of a titanium halide, e.g. the trichloride. The metals plated upon may be iron or steel which may bear a coating of copper or nickel, or titanium itself.
