Abstract

1,195,110. Selective signalling. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 4 Oct., 1967 [5 Oct., 1966], No. 45189/67. Heading G4H. [Also in Divisions F4 and H1] Apparatus for use in making measurements of wall thickness and/or melt temperature in a high temperature furnace comprises a flat elongated body of refractory material having a plurality of metallic conductors extending therein to different distances from one narrow end of the body. As shown in Fig. 5 the body comprises a plurality of thermocouples extending to different distances from one end and as shown in Fig. 10 the body is inserted between adjacent bricks of the furnace lining, the end from which the conductors emerge being thickened to make a heel 12 which facilitates its mounting in the furnace. By measuring the temperature indicated by each thermocouple an extrapolated figure corresponding to the temperature within the furnace may be obtained. As the furnace wall wears away in use, the inner end of the body also wears away thus exposing successive thermoelectric elements; these are short circuited by the conductive melt so providing an estimate of the remaining wall thickness. If a wall thickness measurement alone is required the thermocouples may be replaced by single isolated electrical conductors extending for different distances through the body, Fig. 6 (not shown). The body may be made of alumina and the conductors therein may be given a wave, spiral or zig-zag shape to prevent breakage due to thermal expansion. This risk may be further reduced by surrounding each conductor within the body by a soft insulating material. Thermocouple materials may be various platinum-rhodium alloys. Shapes other than rectangular are proposed for the body of refractory material.
