Abstract

1370465 Thermocouples BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 27 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 12440/71 Heading H1K The temperature of the refractory lining of a vessel is measured by means of a consumable thermocouple comprising two dissimilar metallic conductors embedded in insulating material around which is a layer containing a material capable of assisting in the formation of a conducting deposit across the ends of the conductors, the layer being surrounded by a refractory tube. As shown, Fig. 1, a pair of thermocouple wires 1, 2 of Pt and Pt-Rh respectively, are embedded in MgO 3 within a Pt-Rh tube 4. A layer 5 containing CaF 2 mixed with refractory powder surrounds tube 4 and is enclosed within a refractory tube 6 of recrystallized Al 2 O 3 and an iron or steel sheath 8 separated by a packing 7 of refractory powder. The cable is embedded in the wall of an iron or steel furnace above the level of the melt and connected to a measuring instrument by compensating leads. When the furnace is heated the end of the cable is quickly eroded until it is flush with the furnace lining and the conductors are bridged by a layer of conductive material which is provided by the melting of the CaF 2 layer which forms a viscous molten deposit and by material deposited from the atmosphere of the furnace. Layer 5 may contain interlocking pieces of porcelain. The device can be modified by omitting packing 7 or both packing 7 and sheath 8.
