Abstract
1,075,044. Gun-Sights. FMC CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1966 [March 1, 1965], No. 8760/66. Heading F3C. A gun-sight for a gun G which is mounted for training and elevation in trunnion supports 14 on a hollow pedestal 12 comprises a periscope tube 24 fixedly and coaxially positioned within the hollow pedestal 12, upper and lower azimuth mirrors A1, A and an elevation mirror E. An optical means, e.g. a dove, K- or pechon prism, is located in a rotatable sleeve 32 in the periscope tube 24 for rotation by the gun such that the image of the target is erect independent of the training or elevation of the gun. The upper azimuth mirror A1 and the elevation mirror E are mounted on a shaft 30 extending through one of the trunnion supports 14 such that azimuthal rotation of the trunnion supports causes the mirrors to rotate bodily about the axis of the periscope tube 24. A linkage L rotates shaft 30 to turn the elevation mirror E in elevation. The optical means, i.e. a prism, is driven at half speed with respect to the rotations of the gun in azimuth and elevation by means of interrelated gear trains 26, 28, 34. The gun is manually driven in azimuth by rotating the trunnion supports and is manually elevated through a rack-and-pinion, the rack being urged in a vertical direction by a rotary motion which is translated by an internal epicyclic gear (Figs. 6 and 9, not shown) into linear motion of an elevating tube and a rotatably mounted intermediate gun elevating sleeve. The gun is mounted on a military vehicle (Figs. 1 to 3, not shown), and the breech end of the gun may be lowered into the vehicle by first elevating the gun to a vertical position and then lowering the whole assembly on its carriage.
