Abstract

1,084,065. Aerials. BOFORS A.B. Feb. 21, 1966 [March 2, 1965], No. 7560/66. Heading H4A. [Also in Division H1] An aerial system, suitable for the fire control radar of a fighting vehicle, comprises a dish reflector 4 which is pivoted on a horizontal shaft (10), Fig. 2 (not shown), carried in an upper stand member 6 resting on a lower stand member 5, the whole being rotatable about a vertical axis and mounted upon a base such as a gun turret 2. The two stand members are coupled by means of a horizontal shaft (8) so that the upper member 6 carrying the aerial may be swung down to a transport position beside the lower member 5 as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The primary radiator for the reflector 4 is fed from equipment within the turret 2 by a waveguide (31), Fig. 3 (not shown) which is coupled through a rotating waveguide joint (30) to the lower end of a waveguide (29) fixed to the lower stand member 5 and extending along or near its vertical axis of rotation, the upper end of the said waveguide being bent and inserted through the shaft (8) to a rotating waveguide joint (32). From this joint, the feed is continued through a waveguide (33), fixed to the upper stand member 6, to a rotating waveguide joint (34), from which another waveguide passes through the shaft (10) to the said primary radiator. Rotation of the aerial system in azimuth is effected by a motor (25) inside the turret 2 which is connected by gearing (26), (27), (28) to the lower stand member 5. An elevation drive motor (24), also inside the turret 2, is connected by gears (23) to a horizontal shaft (22) carrying a fork-shaped lever arm (21), motion from which is transmitted by a vertical tubular rod (15), disposed around the waveguide (29), to a similar fork-shaped lever arm (18) carried on a horizontal shaft (14), journalled in the lower stand member 5. There are heads (16), (19) at the ends of the tubular rod (15) having horizontal grooves (17), (20) to receive pins on the ends of the lever arms (18), (21), a rotational joint being provided between one head and the tubular arm. The pins on the ends of the lever arms may each be provided with two rollers, such as (37), (38), Fig. 4 (not shown), which bear on individual tracks (35), (36) formed in the co-operating horizontal groove (17) of the head (16) concerned, to reduce friction and backlash. The motion of the shaft (14) is communicated to the reflector 4 by means of lever arms (13), Fig. 2 (not shown), connecting rods (12), and lever arms (11) attached to the said reflector. The effective radius of the lever arms (13) is made substantially equal to the distance between the axes of the shafts (8) and (14) and when the reflector 4 is to be stowed it is first tilted back so that the pivot joints between the lever arms (13) and the connecting rods (12) lie on or close to the axis of the shaft (8).
