Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of hydrogen energy, the allocation of hydrogen from gas mixtures, obtaining highly pure hydrogen.
99.999%.The sharp increase in hydrogen consumption that is taking place at present is connected, in particular, with the special role that is assigned to the direct, bypassing the heat cycle, conversion of the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity using fuel cells (cars, submarines, laptops, smart homes and etc.), which require hydrogen with a purity of no worse than 99.999%.
Most of the hydrogen is being produced now and will be produced in the near future by reforming organic raw materials, resulting in the formation of a gas mixture containing hydrogen. The critical stage of the process is the release of pure hydrogen from the resulting gas mixture.
It is recognized that the most effective way of separating pure hydrogen is its diffusion purification using various types of metal membrane filters, the vast majority of which today are based on palladium and its alloys.
It is known, for example, a technical solution (see [1] patent for the invention of the Russian Federation No. 2416460, M. C. B01D 63/00, 63/08, 72/02, publ. 04/20/2011), in which a hydrogen-permeable filter membrane is patented element, membrane apparatus. In this case, a method of manufacturing a hydrogen-permeable membrane consists in forming on a flat surface of a palladium alloy foil a special relief with alternating protrusions and depressions surrounding each protrusion, in addition, one or more elements from groups I, III, IV and VIII of the Periodic Table of Elements are introduced into the palladium alloy and when forming the relief, the ratio of the maximum length L of the arc on the surface of the protrusions in their cross section to the length D of its projection onto the base area is performed in the range from 1.05 to 1 + δ, where δ is astichnost alloy membrane material. Known technical solutions are intended for hydrogen evolution from gas mixtures.
Despite the high degree of perfection of the known technical solution and the high purity of hydrogen released with its help, it retains the disadvantages inherent in methods of hydrogen evolution using membranes based on palladium and / or its alloys:
- высокую стоимость, связанную с использованием в качестве основного материала мембран сплава драгоценного металла палладия,- the high cost associated with the use as the main material of the membranes of an alloy of precious metal palladium,
- недостаточную для ряда приложений производительность выделения водорода, что объясняется неудовлетворительными термодинамическими характеристиками сплавов палладия в отношении растворения/пропускания водорода,- insufficient hydrogen production performance for a number of applications, which is explained by the unsatisfactory thermodynamic characteristics of palladium alloys with respect to dissolution / transmission of hydrogen,
- возникновение в материале мембраны микротечей в процессе термо- и водородоциклирования.- the occurrence of micro-leaks in the membrane material in the process of thermal and hydrogen cycling.
On the other hand, it is known that transition metals of the 5th group of the Periodic system of elements (vanadium, niobium and tantalum) have a higher permeability with respect to hydrogen than palladium and palladium-silver alloys, due to the unique combination of high heat of dissolution and high interstitial rate diffusion of hydrogen dissolved in the metal, much larger than in the case of palladium. Metals of the 5th group, in particular vanadium and niobium, are also much cheaper and more affordable than palladium, have good mechanical properties and are easy to process, in particular they have good ductility, which makes it possible to produce thin foils by rolling. However, the use of the favorable characteristics of these metals is to a certain extent difficult due to the high chemical activity of their surface, which is usually covered with dense films of oxides that are rapidly formed during the interaction of metals with air, water vapor, etc. Oxide films radically reduce the rates of dissolution and evolution of hydrogen across the surface of the metal, making the membranes of these metals less permeable to hydrogen.
This problem is overcome by applying thin layers of palladium (of the order of microns) on both surfaces of the membrane of metal of the 5th group. Such a composite membrane, consisting of a relatively thick (fraction of mm) vanadium, niobium or tantalum or their alloys and thin palladium coatings (thickness in fractions of a micron) on both surfaces of the membrane, can successfully combine the favorable properties of both metals: high hydrogen permeability of the base metal of the membrane and high rates of dissolution / evolution of hydrogen through an oxidation-resistant, chemically stable and stable surface of the noble palladium metal.
Known technical solution "High-performance cylindrical membranes coated with palladium" (Palladium coated high-flux tubula rmembranes) (see [2] Canadian patent CA No. 2249126, M. CL B01D 53/22, publ. 02.04.2000), when wherein a membrane having an outer and inner surface of a cylindrical shape is made of niobium, tantalum, vanadium or other metals having the necessary characteristics for the penetration of hydrogen. In this case, the cylindrical membrane is made of non-palladium hydrogen-permeable materials, for example, metals of the 5th group of the Periodic system of elements, and is coated with a thin layer of palladium both on the inner and outer surfaces. Known technical solution is intended for the evolution of hydrogen from gas mixtures.
However, it should be noted that such a manufacturing method leads to a short life of the membrane and a continuous decrease in the productivity of hydrogen evolution by the membrane during its operation in the atmosphere of gas mixtures containing hydrogen. These effects occur, in particular, as a result of the accumulation / dissolution of large concentrations of hydrogen during the penetration of large flows of hydrogen through the membrane in its material. This causes an uneven expansion (hydrogen dilatation) of various parts of the crystal lattice of the membrane material, which leads to a violation of the integrity of both the material of the membrane and the protective-catalytic coating on its surface. In this case, cracks appear, peeling of the coating material from the main material of the membrane (coalescence) occurs, which ultimately leads to the appearance on the membrane surface of the main material of the membrane, metals of the 5th group and their compounds and to poisoning of the catalytic properties of the surface.
[2].For the prototype of the selected device described in [2].
The achieved result of the proposed technical solution is to ensure uniform distribution of hydrogen concentration over the thickness of the membrane.
The achievement of this result is provided in the proposed method for the manufacture of a membrane for hydrogen evolution from gas mixtures, in which a protective-catalytic coating of palladium is applied to the input and output surfaces of the membrane based on metal alloys of the 5th group of the Periodic system with each other or with other metals or palladium alloys, according to the invention, the membrane material is made of an alloy containing impurities of alloying elements, the concentration of which is changed in the direction from the input Rhone membrane to its output side by increasing the solubility of hydrogen in the membrane material in a direction from the inlet side of the membrane to its output side in accordance with the formula
где S(x) - константа растворимости водорода в металле (сплаве),where S (x) is the solubility constant of hydrogen in the metal (alloy),
x - координата в направлении, нормальном к поверхности мембраны,x is the coordinate in the direction normal to the surface of the membrane,
S I - the value of the solubility constant in the membrane material near the input surface,
Rin P O and P - inlet and outlet hydrogen pressures
L - толщина мембраны.L is the thickness of the membrane.
The achievement of the specified technical result with the above differences is as follows.
During the penetration of hydrogen through hydrogen-permeable membranes, it is sequentially absorbed by the input surface of the membrane, dissolves and diffuses the absorbed hydrogen in the membrane material and its evolution (desorption) from the output surface of the membrane. The concentration of hydrogen dissolved in the membrane material depends on the temperature of the membrane, the pressure of hydrogen above the membrane and obeys the Siverts law, which establishes a relationship between the pressure of hydrogen over the membrane and its concentration in this metal:
где c - концентрация растворенного в материале водорода,where c is the concentration of hydrogen dissolved in the material,
P is the pressure of hydrogen above the membrane,
K is the Siverts constant, depending on temperature and the gas-metal system.
- с. 126-130, 426-430):Thus, according to the Sieverts law, the solubility of hydrogen c in a metal at the same gas and metal temperature is proportional to the square root of the partial pressure of hydrogen P above the membrane. To ensure efficient hydrogen evolution / pumping out of the gas mixture (to ensure a high penetrating hydrogen flow), the pressure of hydrogen on the inlet side of the membrane should be significantly higher than its pressure on the outlet side of the membrane. Typically, the pressure of hydrogen at the inlet is tens of atmospheres, and on the output side, units of atmospheres or even lower. Accordingly, the concentration of hydrogen dissolved in the membrane in accordance with the Sieverts law is different near the inlet and outlet surfaces of the membrane. Specifically, the distribution of the concentration of dissolved hydrogen over the thickness of the membrane can be found from Fick's law (see [3] Fromm E., Gebhardt E. Gases and carbon in metals. - M .: Metallurgy, 1980. - pp. 126-130, 426 -430):
где j - проникающий сквозь мембрану поток водорода,where j is the hydrogen stream penetrating through the membrane,
dc/dx - градиент концентрации водорода по толщине мембраны,dc / dx is the gradient of hydrogen concentration over the thickness of the membrane,
D is the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen in this material.
A typical example of the distribution of hydrogen concentration over the thickness of, for example, a vanadium membrane is shown in figure 1 for the following conditions:
давление на выходной поверхности мембраны 0.5 атмосферы (0.5 ата),the pressure on the outlet surface of the membrane is 0.5 atmospheres (0.5 ata),
400°C,membrane temperature 400 ° C,
As seen in FIG. 1, the concentration of dissolved hydrogen in the membrane near its inlet surface substantially exceeds its concentration near the outlet surface.
On the other hand, as mentioned above, the dissolution of hydrogen in the crystal lattice of a metal is accompanied by its expansion (hydrogen dilatation), the value of which is determined by the concentration of dissolved hydrogen. Moreover, the expansion due to the phenomenon of dilatation is very large in magnitude and significantly exceeds thermal expansion. As a result, since the concentration of hydrogen dissolved in the membrane is different in different parts (layers) of the membrane (Fig. 1), radically decreasing in the direction from the input surface of the membrane to its output surface, the various parts (layers) of the membrane expand to different degrees. This leads to the appearance of significant internal stresses, leading both to the appearance of mechanical defects in the protective-catalytic coating (violation of its integrity and exposure of a part of the substrate - coalescence), and to a violation of the membrane's shape up to its destruction. Defects in the coating lead to the fact that instead of a protective-catalytic coating, the main material of the membrane appears on the membrane surface: an alloy of metals of the 5th group of the Periodic Table of Mendeleev, niobium, tantalum or vanadium, which, due to the high chemical activity of their surface, react with gas components mixtures with the formation of oxide compounds that are practically impermeable to hydrogen. Moreover, these processes are especially intense under conditions of multiple thermo-hydrogen cycling, that is, multiple heating / cooling of the membrane in the process of interaction with high-pressure hydrogen.
To eliminate this negative effect in the proposed method for creating a membrane, the membrane material is made of an alloy in which the concentration of alloying elements is changed in the direction from the input side of the membrane to its output side so that the solubility of hydrogen in the membrane material increases in the direction from the input side of the membrane to its output side.
The possibility of reducing the solubility of hydrogen upon the introduction of dopants is confirmed experimentally, as shown in FIG. 2, which shows the dependence of the solubility of hydrogen in a vanadium-palladium alloy as a function of the concentration of an impurity (palladium) in the main material of the membrane (vanadium). As seen in FIG. 2, even slight doping of the main material of the septum, vanadium, with palladium leads to a significant decrease in the solubility of hydrogen in the vanadium-palladium alloy.
Such introduction of alloying elements into the main material of the membrane compensates for the effect of decreasing the concentration of dissolved hydrogen (see Fig. 1) and evens out the concentration of hydrogen along the thickness of the membrane. In this case, the difference in dilatational extensions of different sections of the membrane material decreases and internal stresses are significantly reduced.
Specifically, it is possible to ensure a change in the solubility of hydrogen in the membrane material according to such a law that at given input and output pressures of hydrogen, the concentration of hydrogen in the membrane material will be constant. In this case, the above stresses do not arise at all and the physicomechanical properties of the membrane material and the protective catalytic coating do not deteriorate during repeated thermal and hydrogen cycling. The authors found that the above law of changes in the solubility of hydrogen in the membrane material, ensuring a constant concentration of hydrogen across the membrane, has the following form
где S - константа растворимости водорода в металле (сплаве),where S is the solubility constant of hydrogen in the metal (alloy),
x - координата в направлении, нормальном к поверхности мембраны,x is the coordinate in the direction normal to the surface of the membrane,
S I - the value of the solubility constant in the membrane material near the input surface,
P in and P out - input and output pressure of hydrogen,
L - толщина мембраны.L is the thickness of the membrane.
If the dependence of S on the concentration of the dopant is known, Eq. (3) allows one to find the desired distribution of the impurity over the membrane body.
For example, the authors found that in the case of vanadium doping with palladium
где SV - растворимость водорода в чистом ванадии,where S V is the solubility of hydrogen in pure vanadium,
δ - атомная доля палладия в сплаве.δ is the atomic fraction of palladium in the alloy.
Accordingly, in order to ensure a constant hydrogen concentration in the vanadium-palladium alloy membrane at given inlet and outlet hydrogen pressures, the palladium concentration in the membrane material must be linearly distributed
In FIG. Figure 3 shows, as an example, the distribution of S (x) and δ (x) for a vanadium-palladium-alloy membrane with a thickness of L = 0.1 mm with an input and output pressure ratio P in / P out = 9: P in = 9 at, P out = 1 ata, which ensures a constant concentration of hydrogen in the membrane material.
The practical implementation of the method of manufacturing a membrane of the required variable composition (with a variable concentration of impurities over its thickness) is carried out by one of the known technological methods, which include, for example, gas-phase deposition, magnetron deposition, high-temperature electrolysis of melts, thermal diffusion or ion implantation.
5.In FIG. 4-7 are examples of the practical implementation of the proposed method. In FIG. 4 is an electronic cross-sectional image of a membrane made of a vanadium-palladium alloy with a palladium protective-catalytic coating on the input and output surfaces. In Fig. 4, points (white squares) are marked at which the palladium content in the membrane material is determined using a local X-ray spectral microanalyzer. The relevant data are shown in table 1 and in FIG. 5.
7.Another embodiment is shown in FIG. 6, which shows an electronic cross-sectional image of a membrane made of a vanadium-nickel alloy. Data on the elemental composition of the material of the membrane from a vanadium-nickel alloy are shown in Table 2 and in FIG. 7.
As seen in FIG. 5 and 7, the concentration of dopants (palladium in Fig. 5 and nickel in Fig. 7) decreases in the direction from the inlet side of the membrane to its outlet side, thus providing an increase in the solubility of hydrogen in the membrane material in the direction from the inlet side of the membrane to her exit side.
