Description
The present invention relates to a method for treating underwater surfaces to reduce surface roughness and corrosion.
Surface roughness increases resistance to movement, thereby reducing a ship's speed and increasing its fuel consumption.
Surface roughness is of two types - intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic surface roughness depends on the condition of the hull before painting, the treatment it is subjected to before it is painted, the conditions under which the various paint coats are applied and after the ship has been in service, the rate of degradation of the paint and the amount of corrosion that is efced.
External roughness is due to fouling. This is an accumulative process where marine organisms attach and grow over a long period of time. A fresh surface that is immersed in the sea is coated with a primary glycoprotein film within a couple of hours. This film acts as a substrate for bacteria that attach themselves with the help of acidic polysaccharides. Diatoms and stalked protozoa then attach and grow after the bacterial film has been established. After longer periods of time in the sea, there are two main types of fouling. The first type consists of algal growth, commonly referred to as weed fouling, and examples of such "weeds" are Enteromorpha and Ectocarpus species. The second group consists of organisms with a hard shell, i.e. stalked and sessile shell types such as duck shells.
The overall surface roughness caused by these types of organisms and the amount of friction they create is a source of great expense every year. With a speed loss of 1 knot, you will lose a total of 24 sailing days per year. If you use the rates you had in 1974 as a basis, the moon for a large oil tanker will lose several hundreds of thousands of pounds per year.
Intrinsic surface roughness can be kept down or partially eliminated by skilled craftsmen who carry out the work under good conditions, but cannot be completely eliminated. In many cases, the paint has to be applied under not entirely satisfactory circumstances which leave a significant degree of surface roughness.
To combat marine growth, a paint with anti-fouling substances will often be applied as a top layer. Such paint contains toxic compounds, such as copper oxide, which slowly leach out. The leaching does not occur regularly and is undesirable immediately after the ship has been put into operation, which in turn results in higher concentrations of toxic compounds around the ship in the beginning, which is a waste and pollution problem, and get lower concentrations later, which in turn results in faster growth of
marine organismer. Furthermore, ordinary anti-growth paints will give an electrically polarized surface which becomes rough with age and which promotes a formation of the primary film as mentioned above. While sufficient toxins and poisons are secreted, bacterial growth can be inhibited, but when this secretion stops, growth will rather be promoted.
When marine growth occurs under these conditions it will adhere strongly to the ship's hull and must usually be removed by dry-docking, scraping or repainting, a costly and time-consuming process. A somewhat limited improvement can be achieved alternatively by means of high-pressure water flushing or mechanical scrubbing. However, due to the porous nature of the paint, the base layer of the growth itself is not removed, so the improvement is only temporary.
A shipowner is thus faced with the problem that he can choose either short but frequent, or rare but longer periods when the ship is out of service.
To avoid the problems indicated above, it has been suggested to cover the ship's hull with a film of wax. Thus, UK patent no. 1336103 describes a method in which a ship's hull is temporarily protected after launching with a wax coating. The full description in UK patent application no. 50525/73 describes a method that provides protection against growth on surfaces under water where a layer of wax is applied to the surface possibly over a layer of paint, and the layer is formed by spraying melted wax on the surface (or the paint layer where you have such a layer), and let the wax harden in situ so that the layer is formed. The sprayed-on layer can be smoothed at least partially by remelting using a hot tool. Practical experiments with wax coatings on oil tankers and results obtained with test plates immersed in seawater and in various laboratory tests have confirmed that such wax coatings are very promising, but have also demonstrated two important problems. These are the following: 1) that the smoothness of the wax surface is very important to reduce friction and requires very special attention, 2) that the wax itself has no anti-fouling properties.
The present invention relates to a method for smoothing wax coatings, in particular wax coatings applied by spraying melted wax on the surface.
The present invention thus relates to a method for coating underwater surfaces with wax, which includes applying a wax coating to the surface and smoothing the surface with a hot liquid and/or with the help of mechanical smoothing, preferably under conditions that give plastic flow and deformation of the coating without the coating itself the wax body is melted again.
The liquid can be a gas, especially air, if it is used in combination with mechanical smoothing or can be a pure liquid, e.g. hot water if used alone. The liquid can be directed towards the surface as a jet, preferably at an oblique angle to facilitate flow and deformation. The angle can suitably be from 5 to 45° in relation to the plane of the surface. If the liquid is a gas, its temperature can be from 100 to 500°C, while for an ordinary liquid it should preferably be a temperature from 20 to 110°C. As most types of wax melt at temperatures from 45 to 120°C, the temperature of the liquid should be chosen in relation to the speed of the liquid jet over the surface to be treated as well as the cooling rate of the liquid so that the amount of heat supplied to the wax surface is preferably not so high that the main amount of wax itself melts. The liquid in the jets can have a pressure from 1.4 x 10 dyne/cm to 4 20 x 10 dyne/cm, and the jets can be from 1 cm to 1 m from the surface. The preferred pressure for a gas is from 1.4 x 10 dyne/cm 2 to 35 x 10 dyne/cm 2 , and for a liquid from 35 to 420 x 10<6>dyne/cm<2>.
The use of a liquid can be combined with mechanical smoothing or mechanical smoothing can be used as such alone. By mechanical smoothing it is understood that you run a cloth or a brush over the surface at a relatively high speed, and this mechanical smoothing must be distinguished from the use of heated surfaces which are slowly drawn over the surface for the purpose essentially of remelting the wax. No heat is applied during the mechanical smoothing itself, as the heat is either supplied with the help of the liquid or the friction that arises from contact between the device and. the surface. In practice, it has been found to be effective to use rotating smoothing devices with peripheral speeds of between 130 and 3000 m per second. minute, more particularly from 300 to 1500 m per minute, and a particularly advantageous and useful combination consists of brushes with a diameter of 40 cm rotating at a revolution of 320 revolutions per minute. minute, which gives a scrubbing speed of 400 m per minute. These smoothing devices can be brushes with relatively soft bristles. Said bristles can typically be made of steel, nylon, PVC, polyethylene or fibre-reinforced polymers. The effectiveness of the bristles will be regulated by the material they are made of, their stiffness, diameter, applied load and working angle.
The stiffness of polymer bristles can be increased so that it can be compared to that found in steel bristles by increasing the bristle diameter. In such cases, polymeric bristles will also be able to remove even strong fouling. However, the lower hardness found in plastic and a finer polishing ability in the fibers will ensure that the surface is not damaged, which easily occurs when using steel bristles. In this way, the hull will be cleaned of fouling and a good smoothness will be achieved. Suitable values for the individual parameters can be chosen depending on the composition and hardness of the wax used. The smoothing device can also be a foot pad, a hood made of lamb's wool or a slightly abrasive synthetic material of the "Scotchbrite" type.
The rotating brushes can slide over the wax coating at a speed varying from 5 cm to 5 m per second. second.
The types of wax that can be used will usually have a penetration value of from 1 to 60 mm x 10 as this value can be determined by the method from ASTM D 1321, and with these waxes one will preferably use smoothing devices that have a pressure of from 0.007 to 7 x 10 g down per cm 2, and lower pressure is preferred for cushions and the like, while higher pressure is used when using brushes.
One purpose of the smoothing technique according to the present invention is to give the surface a high gloss and not just remove higher points and fill in depressions. As mentioned above, high gloss is best achieved by plastic flow and deformation rather than remelting, and this can be achieved by a correct choice of liquid temperature and/or pressure on the mechanical smoothing device. The degree of surface gloss can be measured with a gloss meter, e.g. the Sixty Degree Specular Gloss Meter, sold by Sheen Instruments Limited, Richmond, Surrey, England, and the wax surface should preferably have a gloss of at least 50%.
Fischer-Tropsch-voks. A number of different types of wax can be used as mentioned above, and the wax should preferably have a melting point from 45 to 120°C and a penetration value from 1 to 60 mm x 10 (ASTM D 1321). Suitable wax types include mineral waxes, e.g. paraffin wax, chlorinated paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, ozokerite and ceresin, vegetable or animal waxes, e.g. carnauba wax as well as synthetic wax, e.g. Fischer-Tropsch wax. You can use both oxidized and unoxidized wax. Mixtures of two or more types of wax can be used to obtain an optimal physical property, e.g. particularly good gloss. For example, the wax can contain from 1 to 20% by weight of an alkyd or shellac resin to give the coating a high surface gloss, alternatively the same amount of polyethylene or polyvinyl acetate can be used for this purpose.
As mentioned above, the smoothing technique according to the present invention will be particularly well suited for wax coatings applied by spraying melted wax, e.g. as described in UK patent application no. 50523/73.
A biocide may be incorporated into the wax as described
i UK-patentsøknad nr. 11186/74, 11187/74 og 25085/74. in UK Patent Application Nos. 11186/74, 11187/74 and 25085/74.
The present invention includes surfaces for underwater use with a smooth wax coating as described above. Said surfaces can be ship hulls or other fixed or movable underwater surfaces, e.g. the legs of drilling and production platforms.
De følgende eksempler illustrerer oppfinnelsen. The following examples illustrate the invention.
Eksempel 1.Example 1.
A wax film was formed by spraying molten paraffin wax (melting point 60-62°C) onto a steel plate. The first coating had a nominal thickness of 250 micrometres, but was very rough and uneven, i.e. had an average roughness of less than 200 micrometer centerlines.
A water jet with a temperature of 55°C and a pressure of 124 kg/cm was directed towards the wax surface at an angle to the surface of from 20 to 30°. When the beam was 1 meter from the surface, no smoothing was obtained. At a distance of 30 cm from the surface, a certain amount of plastic flow and a certain degree of smoothing were obtained. At a distance of 10 cm, the surface was plastically deformed and an average surface roughness of less than 10 micrometer center lines was obtained.
When the pressure was increased to 210 kg/m, this same degree of smoothing was obtained at a distance of 20 cm from the surface.
Eksempel 2.Example 2.
Wax films were formed by spraying different mixtures of melted wax onto steel plates. The films had an average thickness of 150 microns, but were rough and did not have a fine gloss. The wax films were then mechanically polished using a lamb's wool polishing piece with a diameter of 12.5 cm, a rotation speed of 2000 rpm. minute and speed of 5 cm/second. The following results were obtained at a pressure of o 1.02 kg/cm 2 on the polishing device.
It appears that all the polished coatings were very smooth and those containing carnauba or oxidized microwax also had a significant shine.
