Abstract

Radikaler med uparede elektroner initierer en kjedereaksjon hvor lavere hydrokarboner som metan omdannes til oksygenerte væsker. En initiator som Marshalls syre anvendes til å danne metylradikaler. Disse radikaler kombinerer seg med svoveltrioksid og danner metylsulfonatradikaler som så fjerner hydrogen fra metan tilført i reaktoren, og det dannes stabil metansulfonsyre (MSA, HCSOH) og nye metylradikaler slik at kjedereaksjonen opprettholdes mens metan og S0tilføres kontinuerlig til reaktoren. Vannfne betingelser unngår bruk eller dannelse av vann. MSA i reaktoren øker løseligheten av metan og SOog reaksjonshastighetene. MSA kan oppvarmes for å frigjøre metanol, eller bli bearbeidet til bensin, dimetyleter, formaldehyd eller andre verdifulle væsker. Eventuelt S0frigjort ved behandlingen av MSA kan bli oksidert til SOog resirkulert i systemet. Forsøk viser svært høye utbytter og selektiviteter (over 95 %).
