Process for the preparation of chlorothiol formates and process for the preparation of alkylthiol carbamates.
Bovendien zijn chloorthiolformiaten nuttig als tussenprodukten bij de be-5 reiding van als herbiciden werkzame thiolcarbamaten en aanverwante verbindingen, zie bijvoorbeeld de Amerikaanse octrooi-schriften 2.913.327, 3.126.406, 3.175.897 en 3.185.720.Some chlorothiol formates, especially ethyl chlorothiol formate, have been found to be useful as pesticides, see, for example, U.S. Pat. No. 3,093,537. In addition, chlorothiol formates are useful as intermediates in the preparation of thiol carbamates acting as herbicides and related compounds, see, for example, U.S. Pat. Nos. 2,913,327, 3,126,406, 3,175,897 and 3,185,720.
The appropriate mercaptan is reacted with phosgene for the preparation of alkyl and phenyl-chloro-thicoformates. In the absence of any catalyst, it takes several days to complete this reaction to a greater or lesser extent.
Pat. Nos. 3,093,537, 3,165,544, 4,012,405, and 4,119,659 disclose the use of activated carbon as a catalyst for the preparation of alkyl and phenyl chlorothiol formates, and U.S. Patent 3,299,114 the use of tertiary amines and heterocyclic nitrogen compounds has been described above.
It has now been found that the reaction of a mercaptan with phosgene is well catalyzed by a) secondary amines and secondary aramium salts, b) quaternary ammonium salts and c) basic ion exchangers.
The secondary amines of group a) are represented by the general formula R 1, N 1 NH, and the salts derived therefrom by the formula R 1 R 1 N 1 N X, wherein R 1 and R 1 are alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylmethyl, by lower alkyl substituted cycloalkyl, aryl, halogen or lower alkyl substituted 800 24 96 2 aryl, aralkyl and halogen substituted aralkyl, and wherein X is a monovalent anion. More particularly, the alkyl groups can have 1 to 12 carbon atoms, the alkenyl groups 3 or 4, the cycloalkyl groups 3 to 6, and the 5 aryl and aralkyl groups 6 to 10 carbon atoms. By "lower alkyl" here are meant alkyl groups of 1-4 carbon atoms. Preference is given to secondary amines and salts derived therefrom in which R 1 and R 1 are alkyl of 1-6 (especially 1-4) carbon atoms and / or cycloalkyl groups of 3-6 carbon atoms.
Examples of other secondary amines are found in U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,126,406 and 3,896,169 (especially Table 1 of the latter) which deal with the preparation of thiol carbamates derived from said secondary amines.
Examples of alkyl groups with 1-12 carbon atoms are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, n-pentyl, neopentyl, hexyl, neo hexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl and n-dodecyl. Examples of alkenyl groups are allyl, methallyl and butenyl. Examples of optionally alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl and cycloalkylmethyl groups are cyclopropyl, cyclobutyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, 3-methylcyclohexyl, dimethylcyclohexyl, 1-methylcyclopropyl, 3-methylcyclobutyl, 2-ethyl-cyclopropylmethyl, cyclopropylbutyl -methyl, 1-methylcyclopropyimethyl, 3-methylcyclopentyimethyl, 3-methylcyclobutyimethyl and 2-ethylcyclopropyimethyl. Among the aryl and aralkyl groups can be mentioned phenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 2-toluyl, 3-toluyl, 2-naphthyl, 3-chloro-4-methylphenyl, 4-bromophen-benzyl, 4-chlorobenzyl and 2-phenylethyl .
The intended process uses a catalytic amount of secondary amine. Without any catalyst, it takes several days to achieve more than 80% conversion, but with 0.01 to 10 mole percent secondary amine (based on mer-captane), the reaction proceeds in 4 to 16 hours. Generally, between 0.05 and 0.5 or 1 mole of secondary amine per mole of mer-35 captan will be used. It has been found that with 0.01 to 0.05 mol% di-n-propylamine, for example, the reaction of n-propyl mercaptan with phosphorus does not proceed at a technically acceptable rate and leads to high quality chlorothiol formate. .
The quaternary ammonium salts can be represented by the formula R ^, R ^, Rg, Rg NX, wherein R ^, R ^, Rg, and Rg independently of each other are C] - “^^ - alkyl, C2-Cg-alkenyl , phenyl, C8 -C18 alkaryl and / or C8 -C18 aralkyl and X is a monovalent anion as is usually found in quaternary ammonium salts. In general, X is a halogen, especially chloride, bromide or iodide, or else hydroxyl, nitrate, methyl-10 sulfate, etc. Whatever the anion of the quaternary ammonium salt may be, it is expected that it will the reaction is exchanged for the chloride formed during the reaction with the phosgene. The nature of the groups Rg, Rc, Rg and Rg can vary widely, but preferably one of them is phenyl or aralkyl and another is a long aliphatic hydrocarbon group (containing 8 to 22 carbon atoms) and the latter two are short aliphatic groups (with 1 to 7 carbon atoms), and X is halogen, for example chloride. Particular preference is given to compounds in which Rg is, R? and Rg are both C 1 -C 18 alkyl and R 1 is phenyl or benzyl. The alkyl groups can be branched or unbranched and optionally substituted with functional groups provided they do not interfere with the catalytic activity of the quaternary ammonium salt.
Voorbeelden van alkyl-groepen met 1-22 koolstof-25 atomen zijn methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, n-pentyl, neopentyl, hexyl, neo-hexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, undecyl, n-dodecyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, pentadecyl, hexadecyl, hepta-decyl, octadecyl, nonadecyl, eicosyl, eneicosyl, en docosyl.Examples of alkyl groups with 1-22 carbon-25 atoms are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, n-pentyl, neopentyl, hexyl, neo hexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, undecyl, n-dodecyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, pentadecyl, hexadecyl, hepta-decyl, octadecyl, nonadecyl, eicosyl, eneicosyl, and docosyl .
Examples of alkynyl groups are allyl, methallyl and butenyl. Examples of alkaryl and aralkyl groups with 6-9 carbon atoms are phenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 2-toluyl, 3-toluyl, 3-chloro-4-methylphenyl, 4-bromophenyl, benzyl, 4-chlorobenzyl and 2-phenyl- ethyl.
The quaternary ammonium salts referred to can be prepared in known manner, in particular by alkylation of 800 2 4 96 4 primary, secondary or tertiary amines. When starting from a primary or a secondary amine, an alkaline substance is added to neutralize the acid produced in the alkylation. The most commonly used alkylation is methyl chloride, dimethyl sulfate and benzyl chloride. Individual examples of quaternary ammonium salts are ethyl trimethyl ammonium iodide, tetramethyl ammonium chloride, trimethyloctadecylammonium chloride, Dimethyldioctadecylammonium, dimethyldikokosalkyl-ammonium chloride, trimethyldodecylammonium chloride, tricaprylylme-10 trimethyl ammonium chloride, benzyltrimethylammonium chloride, iodide, methyl allylfenylbenzylammoniumj, benzyltriethylammonium chloride, sojaalkyltrimethylammoniumchloride, palmityltrimethylammoniumchloride, coconut trimethyl ammonium chloride, allyltrimethylammonium chloride, benzyltrimethylammonium chloride, dialkyl- (C 1 -CQ) -15 dimethylammonium chloride, dialkyl- (C 1 -C 3 -g) dimethyl ammonium chloride, dialkyl (C 1 -C 3 dimethyl ammonium chloride, distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, tri-alkyl-) ammonium chloride, dimethylalkyl- (Cgg) benzylammonium chloride, dimethylalkyl- (CjQ-Cgg) -benzylammoniimichloride and dimethylstearyl benzyl ammonium chloride.
Those skilled in the art will appreciate that quaternary ammonium salts other than those listed above are commercially available or can be prepared in a known manner.
Typical commercial combinations are methyl groups, fatty alkyl and imidazoinium groups with amido substituents and with chloride or methyl sulfate as anions. In the named salts, methyl can always be replaced by ethyl or propyl, and chloride by hydroxyl or bromide. Such quaternary ammonium salts can serve as catalysts, and it is expected that with all these the same results will be achieved.
A catalytic amount, that is, an amount sufficient to bring the reaction rate to an acceptable level, is used for the reaction. Without any catalyst, the reaction takes days to have at least 80% conversion, for example, but with a little quaternary ammonium salt, the reaction is complete in 0.1 to 20 hours. In general, 800 2 4 96 * 4 5 is used between 0.01 and 10 mol% quaternary ammonium salt, based on the amount of mercaptan, and usually between 0.1 and 1 or 5 mol%. It has been found that with, for example, about 0.2 mol.% Benzyltriethylammonium chloride (based on mercaptan), the reaction of ethyl mercaptan with phosgene runs at a sufficiently high speed for technical application, whereby a high quality chlorothiol formate is formed.
Deze anionenwisselaars bestaan in principe uit twee delen: een structuur-deel (de matrix) en een functioneel deel (de ion-actieve groepen).Basic anion exchangers which can serve as catalysts according to the invention are well known in the art, many of which are commercially available. These contain primary, secondary and / or tertiary amine groups or quaternary ammonium groups on a three-dimensional network. In general, two groups are distinguished, namely the strongly basic anion exchangers (with quaternary aramonium groups) and the weakly basic anion exchangers (with many amino groups). Both can serve as catalysts in the process according to the invention. These anion exchangers basically consist of two parts: a structural part (the matrix) and a functional part (the ion-active groups).
A wide variety of different anion exchangers is possible by varying combinations of those two basic parts.
The structural part generally consists of polymers or copolymers which have been formed by condensation or by addition polymerization. Condensation polymers have high molecular weights and cross-linked structures, and they arise from small polyfunctional monomers, for example, by condensation of phenol with formaldehyde or of an epoxide such as epichlorohydrin with an amine or ammonia. Addition polymers are formed by polymerization of mixtures of olefins and diolefins (eg styrene with a little diphenylbenzene) under the influence of free radicals. Generally, addition polymers are more resistant to hydrolysis and oxidative degradation, and are therefore preferred.
Commercially available basic anion exchangers are usually of the styrene-divinylbenzene type. The amount of divinylbenzene in the polymer ranges from 1 to 16%, for example, between 4 and 12%, usually about 8%. Such an 800 24 96 6 copolymer is usually formed by free radical polymerization in suspension, and then it is modified by chlorination or by chloromethylation with chloromethylmethyl ether under the influence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The thus modified Al-5 polymer is then reacted with an amine, a polyamine or with ammonia. For example, reaction of a chlorinated polymer with a tertiary amine in the presence of a polar solvent such as water gives a quaternary ammonium salt. Amination of the chlorinated polymer can be done with alkylamines and with polyamines, allowing a wide variety of strong and weak basic anion exchangers. Resins with quaternary ammonium groups are considered to be strongly basic anion exchangers, and those with amine or polyamine groups are considered to be weakly basic exchangers. Although the counter ion of these resins can vary, these ion exchangers are usually supplied in the chloride form.
The ion exchangers to be used in the method according to the invention are generally used in the pearl form with dimensions between 0.04 mm and 1.2 mm. Although gelatinous resins can be used, granular or pearl-shaped catalysts are preferred. Macroporous large-mesh resins are also available, which have pores that are considerably larger than the usual gel-like resins. The chosen physical shape of the catalyst should be such that the ion exchangers will withstand mechanical breakdown from the forces they encounter upon application, especially from wear. Furthermore, the resin must be somewhat chemically resistant to the chemicals it will encounter, that is, to the starting materials and reaction products of the mer-captan phosgene reaction.
The use of a solid, granular basic anion exchanger as a catalyst has the advantage that the resin is insoluble in the reaction medium and can therefore be separated as a solid easily by filtration or decanting after the reaction has ended. The solid resin can be placed in a column and the process carried out continuously by passing mercaptan and phosgene continuously through the column. The solid resin can also be continuously fed to a stirred reaction vessel, the reaction then taking place in batches or semi-continuously. A resinous catalyst also provides less catalyst costs than the conventional amine catalysts in that they can be used repeatedly and usually without regeneration.
Voorbeelden zijn de ionenwisselaars van de series AMBEKLITE IRA-900 en IRA-93 en de grootmazige AMBERLYST A-26 en A-29.Among the basic anion exchangers which can be used in the process according to the invention, one can mention the commercial products which are sold under the names DUOLITE, DOWEX, IONAC, AMBEKLITE and AMBERLYST. Examples are the ion exchangers of the AMBEKLITE IRA-900 and IRA-93 series and the large-mesh AMBERLYST A-26 and A-29.
The amount of basic anion exchanger to catalyze the reaction of mercaptan with phosgene is that amount which accelerates the reaction to an extent acceptable for technical application, ie a catalytic amount. In general, when the reaction is carried out in a stirred reactor, between 100 and 40 g, for example 20 g of synthetic resin, are used per 100 g of mercaptan. When the reaction is carried out continuously, in a column, the amount of synthetic resin is less important because the catalyst is then used without ceasing until it becomes inactivated. In other words, enough synthetic resin is used to have between 0.001 and 0.2 equivalent ion exchange capacity per mole of mercaptan used. More in particular, between 0.01 and 0.1, for example 0.05 equivalent of ion exchanger, is used per mole of mercaptan.
Mercaptans which can be reacted with phosgene according to the invention can be represented by the formula RSH, wherein R may be alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylmethyl, lower alkynyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, haloaryl, haloaralkyl and earboalkoxyalkyl. These mercaptans are sufficiently known in the art, and are mentioned inter alia in the aforementioned U.S. patents. They can be prepared in a manner known in the art, including by reaction of an alkyl halide or an alkali metal alkyl sulfate with sodium or potassium hydrosulfide, or by reaction of the corresponding 800 24 96 alcohol with 1 2 S in the vapor phase , or by addition of E ^ S to the corresponding unsaturated compound.
In the formula RSH, R is generally branched or unbranched alkyl of 1-15 carbon atoms, carboalkoxyalkyl of 5 2-10 carbon atoms, alkenyl of 2-5 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl or cycloalkylmethyl of 3-7 carbon atoms, or optionally halogen-substituted aryl or alkaryl or aralkyl with 6-10 carbon atoms. In general, the aliphatic and aromatic groups mentioned in connection with the amines and ammonium salts serving as catalysts also apply to the group R of the mercaptan. Often R alkyl will have 1-10 (preferably 1-6) carbon atoms, alkenyl with 3-4 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl or cycloalkylmethyl with 5-6 carbon atoms, phenyl, phenyl, monochlorophenyl or polychlorophenyl substituted with C 1 -C 20 alkyl. benzyl or chlorobenzyl, or carboalkoxyalkyl of 2-5 carbon atoms.

The amount of phosgene to be used can vary, but in general at least one stoichiometric amount is used, i.e. at least 1 mole of phosgene per mole of mercaptan. Most often, excess phosgene will be taken, such as 5 to 50 mole percent excess, because the phosgene can be easily removed from the reaction mixture, and an excess of mercaptan would favor the formation of the undesired dithiol carbonate.
The reaction of the mercaptan with phosgene usually takes place at ordinary pressure, although increased or reduced pressure are applicable. The reaction temperature should be kept as low as possible, but allow a reasonable reaction speed; the higher the temperature, the more and more dithiol carbonate is formed. Since said mercaptans exhibit varying reactions and varying decomposition temperatures, care must be taken when selecting the reaction temperature.
800 24 96 10800 24 96 10
With an excess of phosgene, the reaction temperature will generally be between 0 ° and 70 ° C, with ordinary pressure and refluxing phosgene. Usually the reaction temperature will be between 10 ° and 50 ° C, for example between 10 ° and 35 ° C.
In a suitable reactor the starting materials can be introduced in any desired order or simultaneously, but mercaptan is preferably added to a stock of phosgene. Furthermore, in a discontinuous mode, it is preferable that the mercaptan is added slowly to the phosgene in order to control the temperature and prevent the formation of the by-product dithiol carbonate. When phosgene is added to a stock of mercaptan, the reaction starts at a higher temperature than in the other order, and the chance of forming dithiol carbonate is enhanced. If a secondary amine is used as a catalyst, it is preferably mixed with the mercaptan, but addition to the phosgene is also allowed.
The reaction can be carried out in portions by adding the starting materials to a bottom of chlorothiol formate (which was left over from a previous preparation). Although the initial temperature is higher than when mercaptan is added to a stock of phosgene, the reaction time is often shorter. Preparation of chlorothiol formate by continuous reaction is also quite possible.
The chlorothiol-25 formate prepared according to the invention contains a very low content of organic disulfide according to the formula RSSR and also very little dithiol carbonate. The low disulfide content strongly contrasts with the high amount of this by-product found in the chlorothiol formate obtained when using activated carbon as a catalyst. See, for example, column 1 of U.S. Pat. No. 4,012,405, which mentions 3 to 7% diethyl disulfide as a by-product of the preparation of ethylchlorothiol formate. Moreover, the catalysts to be used according to the invention do not seem to catalyze the reaction of chlorothiol formate with even more mercaptan to dithiol carbonate.
When carrying out the process according to the invention, the reaction mixture is usually stirred to aid the removal of the heat of reaction from the reactor. At the end of the reaction, excess phosgene is removed, for example by evaporation. This evaporation can be done by suction, whereby the phosgene will boil or by passing an inert gas such as nitrogen; the reaction mixture can also be boiled gently to remove the excess phosgene. When the excess phosgene is removed, ammonium salt used as a catalyst will usually precipitate, and it can be filtered off. If an anion exchanger had been used as a catalyst, it is also best to separate it from the residue after removing the phosgene by decanting or filtering off. A quaternary ammonium salt can optionally also be washed away with water from the reaction mixture, but it is not preferable that water can react with chloro-thiol formate and thus reduce the yield; the quaternary ammonium salt can also be left in the reaction mixture.
After degassing, the resulting chlorothiol formate is pure enough for most industrial applications, i.e. as an intermediate in the preparation of thiol carbamates.
If further purification is desired, the chlorothiol formate can be distilled or recrystallized.
If the chlorothiol formate is to be converted into a thiol carbamate, it is reacted with a secondary amine in the presence of an acid pathway scavenger such as NaOH. Enough amine is added to convert all the chlorothiol formate to thiol carbamate. If a secondary amine was used as a catalyst, residues of the catalyst need not be removed; the diamine can be the same as that which served as a catalyst, but also different.
In a representative example of a discontinuous preparation according to the invention, 0.6 moles of phosgene are condensed in the reactor per mole of mercaptan, so that a phosgene stock of about 10 ° C is then obtained. If a quaternary ammonium salt or a basic anion exchanger is used as the catalyst, 0.2 mol of salt 8002496 12 or 0.05 equivalent per mole of mercaptan was first introduced into the flask. Then ethyl mercaptan is added slowly and at the same time another 0.6 moles of phosgene per mole of mercaptan. If a secondary amine is used as a catalyst, it is dissolved in the mercaptan in advance. This mercaptan and the additional phosgene are added with continuous stirring, generally taking about an hour. Evaporated phosgene is condensed in a reflux condenser and thus returned to the reactor. As the reaction proceeds, phosgene and ethyl mercaptan are consumed, and the boiling point of the reaction mixture rises from about 10 ° C to about 27 ° C. After a sufficient reaction time (2 to 3 hours with an anion exchanger, 5-6 hours with a secondary amine and about 10 hours with a quaternary ammonium salt), excess phosgene and unreacted ethyl mercaptan are removed from the reactor by evaporation and the product formed is removed from the reactor.
The invention is now further illustrated by the following non-limiting examples. The purity of the obtained chlorothiol formate was determined from a graph of a gas chromatogram as% peak area.

In a 30 ml serum vial, 0.194 µmole of phosgene was condensed, and then it was closed with a "Viton" cap. With a hypodermic needle, 0.171 gmol ethyl mercaptan containing 0.01 gmol di-n-propylamine was injected into the vial.
The reaction mixture was stirred and allowed to warm from -70 ° C to 0 ° C (wet ice) at which temperature it was left for 250 minutes. The reaction was followed by gas chromatography of the unreacted ethyl mercaptan. During those 250 minutes at 0 ° C, the reaction mixture was homogeneous and about 90% of the ethyl mercaptan was converted.
The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature overnight so that excess phosgene disappeared. The crude product was washed with 2 x 30 ml of distilled water to remove the amine, dried over Na 2 SO 4, and filtered.
There was thus obtained 13.7 g of a water-clear product, which was identified by gas chromatography as ethyl chlorothiol formate 80 0 2 4 96 m%.

Bij het 15 eind van de ethylmercaptan- toevoeging was de temperatuur 7,5°C.In a 1 liter three-necked round bottom flask, equipped with motor stirrer, thermometer, dropping funnel, fos-inlet tube and a cooler filled with carbon dioxide and acetone, which was itself in a wet ice bath, 4.8 gm of phosgene condensed. A mixture of 4.0 gmoles of ethyl mercaptan and 0.2 gmoles of di-n-propylamine was placed in the dropping funnel. When about half of the phosgene had entered the flask, the addition of the ethyl mercaptan was started with stirring at a rate of 2-3 ml / min. At the start of the reaction, the temperature of the mixture was 7 ° C. The ice bath was not used during the addition of the ethyl mercaptan, which lasted 117 minutes. At the end of the ethyl mercaptan addition, the temperature was 7.5 ° C.
The reaction mixture was stirred overnight (about 17 g hours), and the following morning a gas chromatogram learned that the ethyl mercaptan had largely reacted. Excess phosgene and unreacted ethyl mercaptan were removed from the reaction mixture by blowing nitrogen, and towards the end of this degassing, a white substance separated which was removed from the flask by filtration. The liquid reaction product was identified by gas chromatography as ethyl chlorothiol formate with 97.7% purity. It was estimated that this product contained about 0.05% diethyl disulfide and 0.05% diethyl dithiol carbonate. The degassed product yield was found to be 84.2% of the theoretically possible. The white matter that had been filtered off was identified as di-n-propylammonium chloride by determining the melting point.
30 Voorbeeld IIIExample III
The experiment of Example II was repeated, except that no di-n-propylamine was added to the ethyl mercaptan and the ethyl mercaptan was added to the flask over 89 minutes. No other phenomenon was observed than refluxing the phosgene. The temperature of the mixture remained at 15 ° C for at least 6 hours, and was found to be 13 ° C 12 hours after the addition of the ethyl mercaptan. The mixture was left under stirring overnight.
The next morning (about 24 hours after the start of the experiment), it was found that all the carbonic acid had disappeared from the reflux cow, allowing the phosgene to escape from the reaction system. The reaction mixture had a temperature of 19 ° C. Gas chromatography revealed that there was no excess phosgene left in the mixture and about a quarter of the ethyl mercaptan had then reacted.
Now another 92 g of phosgene was added with stirring, and the temperature of the reaction mixture dropped to about 17 ° C. The contents were stirred for the rest of the day, while the reflux condenser was fed with 50% ethylene glycol in water running through a cooling circuit. The following afternoon, the temperature of the mixture was found to be 24 ° C and gas chromatography of this mixture showed that about half of the ethyl mercaptan had reacted. Still a day later, the reaction temperature was found to be 26 ° C and about three quarters of the ethyl mercaptan was found to have reacted.
Again the following day (four days after the start), the reaction mixture was degassed with nitrogen. The remaining reaction mixture was identified as ethyl chlorothiol formate by gas chromatography; yield 71.7%. The purity of this was 99.5%; it contained about 0.1% diethyl disulfide and 0.3% diethylthiol carbonate.

The experiment of Example II was repeated, except that 0.001 gmole of di-n-propylamine was used as catalyst, 2.0 gmole of ethyl mercaptan and 2.4 mole of phosgene. The mixture of ethyl mercaptan and catalyst was added over 50 minutes.
The reaction temperature slowly rose from 8 ° C over 9 hours to 24 ° C, indicating that no significant reaction took place. The test was then terminated by accidentally drawing NaOH solution from a wash bottle into the reaction system. A gas chromatography analysis of the reaction mixture 6 hours after the start of the addition showed that about 50% of the ethyl mercaptan 800 24 96 15 had then reacted.
Voorbeeld VExample V
The experiment of Example IV was repeated, except that 2.0 gmole of n-propyl mercaptan, 2.2 gmole of phosgene and 0.002 mole of di-n-propylamine were now used. The n-propyl mercaptan was slowly added to the flask over 108 minutes, with the temperature rising from 9 ° C to 26 ° C over 9 hours. Analysis after 7 hours showed that about 84% of the mercaptan had reacted. About 12 hours after the start of the mercaptan addition, the reaction mixture was heated to 35 ° C and degassed with argon in 10 hours. The degassed product yield was found to be 93.9% of the theoretically possible. The propyl chlorothiol formate (identified by gas chromatography) was found to be about 99.2% pure and contained 0.2% di-n-propyldithiol carbonate and about 0.6% unknown.

De uitkomsten van de zes bepalingen staan in tabel A.In a 1 liter three-necked round bottom flask equipped with stirrer with motor, thermometer, dropping funnel, phosgene inlet tube and cooler filled with carbon dioxide and acetone, and 2Q cooled by itself with wet ice, 0.6 g (0.2 mol .%) solid benzyl triethylammonium chloride. Thereafter, 1.37 gmole of phosgene was condensed in the flask, then 75 g (1.208 gmole) of ethyl mercaptan was added via the dropping funnel with stirring for 38 minutes. The temperature of the reaction mixture was 21 ° C at the start of the ethyl mercaptan addition (during which the ice bath was not used), and 37 ° C at the end. Stirring was then continued for about 11 hours during which five samples were taken and examined for unreacted mercaptan by gas chromatography. Stirring was then continued for 9 hours (overnight), after which a final sample was taken. The final temperature of the reaction mixture was 20 ° C. The results of the six determinations are shown in Table A.

Data from Tables A and B showed that benzyltriethylanmonium chloride catalyzes the reaction of phosgene with mercaptan, and the yield of ethylchlorothiol formate was found to be at least 85% after 5-6 and at least 90% after 10-11 hours.

The mixture was kept at 0 ° C and 1.0 g (0.01 gmole) of triethylamine was added to the vial. The mixture was shaken for 4.5 hours and kept at 0 ° C, after which a gas chromatographic analysis was performed in a sample. In those 45 hours, about 80% of the ethyl mercaptan disappeared and ethyl chlorothiol formate was found.
10 In net zo'n serumflesje werden 21,0 g (0,212 gmol) fosgeen, 9,6 g (0,155 gmol) ethylmercaptan en 0,56 g (0,01 gmol) ammoniumchloride gebracht. Het NH^Cl lostte niet noemenswaard op. Het reactiemengsel werd 4 uur op kamertemperatuur (ca 23°C) gehouden, en toen was tenminste 80 % van het ethylmer-15 captan niet omgezet.21.0 g (0.212 gmol) of phosgene, 9.6 g (0.155 gmol) of ethyl mercaptan and 0.56 g (0.01 gmol) of ammonium chloride were placed in just such a serum vial. The NHCl did not dissolve to any significant extent. The reaction mixture was kept at room temperature (about 23 ° C) for 4 hours, at which time at least 80% of the ethylmer-15 captan was not converted.
This shows that ammonium chloride is at best a poor catalyst for the reaction of ethyl mercaptan with phosgene.

Into a round bottom flask equipped with motor stirrer, thermometer, dropping funnel, phosgene inlet tube and reflux condenser filled with carbonated ice and acetone was charged 17.74 g AMBEKLYST A-26 (ion exchanger with 0.075 g equivalent anion sites). This ion exchanger was first washed with methanol (to remove the usual moisture) and the methanol was removed by heating the washed resin under a stream of nitrogen. 1.8 µmoles of phosgene were now condensed in the flask, and 1.5 µmoles of ethyl mercaptan were added via the dropping funnel over 20 minutes with stirring. At the beginning of the mercaptan addition (during which the ice bath was not used), the temperature was about 7 ° C, and at the end about 9 ° G.
The reaction mixture was stirred for about 2 hours, and the reaction was followed by gas chromatography to determine the unreacted ethyl mercaptan. With the ice bath, the temperature was kept at about 20 ° C. The crude reaction product was identified by gas chromatography as ethyl chlorothiol formate of about 90% purity. It contained about 9.5% phosgene, 0.25% ethyl mercaptan and traces of diethyl disulfide and diethyl dihiol carbonate. A very small amount of methyl chloroformate and dimethyl carbonate was found by gas chromatography and with the mass spectrometer 5; these are believed to arise from the traces of methanol that had not been removed from the washed resin.

De proef van voorbeeld VIII werd in dezelfde 10 kolf voortgezet; nu werden nog eens 1,5 gmol ethylmercaptan enThe experiment of Example VIII was continued in the same flask; now an additional 1.5 gmoles of ethyl mercaptan and
Voorbeeld X1.8 gm of phosgene were added over 13 minutes, keeping the temperature at about 20 ° C. The crude reaction mixture, which has not yet been degassed, was added to about 3 stirred for an hour, then found to contain 91% ethyl chlorothiol formate, 7.8% phosgene, 1.1% ethyl mercaptan and 15 traces of diethyl disulfide and diethyl dithiol carbonate. Example X.
With the resin and reaction mixture of Example II still in the flask, the reaction mixture was heated to about 40 ° C and phosgene was added (0.76 gmole) until boiling. In about 4 minutes time, 0.63 g mol of ethyl mercaptan was now added, after which the whole was kept under stirring at 35 ° C for another 1 hour. The crude reaction mixture was now found to contain 90% ethyl chlorothiol formate, 9% phosgene, 0.2% ethyl mercaptan, 0.1% diethyl dithiol carbonate and a trace of diethyl disulfide.
These three experiments show that the basic ion exchanger catalyzes the reaction of mercaptan with phosgene with little or no by-product formation. The catalyst of Example 8 was also still active in the tests of Examples IX and X.
