THERMOPLASTISCHE VORMMASSA j jTHERMOPLASTIC MOLDING MASS j j
The invention relates to a thermoplastic molding material with reduced flammability based on one or more vinyl chloride polymers and a graft copolymer of a vinyl aromatic compound and a nitrile on a rubbery polymer.
Articles made from such blends have extremely high impact strength and stiffness compared to the starting materials (ABS and PVC) while these blends already have some degree of flame retardancy.
In order to meet the stringent requirements for flame retardancy required for a number of plastic applications, an additional flame retardant must in many cases be added.
The most famous is antimony trioxide. However, this has the drawback that the relatively large amounts of flame retardant required have a negative impact on the impact resistance of the product.
The object of the invention is to provide a thermoplastic molding material with reduced flammability based on ABS and PVC with minimal amounts of flame retardant, with little or no deterioration of the mechanical properties due to the blended flame retardant.
According to the invention, such a molding compound is characterized by: A 20-80 wt. parts of vinyl chloride polymer B 80-20 wt. parts of a mixture of Bl 30-100 wt% graft copolymer obtained by 30 Bl-1 a monomer mixture consisting of 0-75 wt% acrylonitrile and / or methacrylonitrile and 100-25 wt% styrene and / or a - to polymerize methylstyrene in the presence of a 790 4 9 91 * -2-j * 1 Bl-2 rubbery polymer, the weight ratio of the monomer mixture to the rubbery polymer being between 1:10 and 10: 1, and B-2 0 -70 wt% of a copolymer obtained by polymerization of B-2-1 0-75 wt% acrylonitrile and / or methacrylonitrile, and B-2-2 100-25 wt% styrene and / or oc-methylstyrene, and C 0.05-5 wt. parts based on 100 wt. parts (A + B) of a compound of zinc and titanium or a mixture of compounds of zinc and titanium.
Als komppnent C past men bij voorkeur zink-titaan(iy)oxide toe.Zinc-titanium (iy) oxide is preferably used as component C.
This is a zinc-titanium-oxygen compound which often still contains some free zinc oxide. The connection is usually prepared by two parts. react zinc oxide with one part of titanium oxide. Although the use as flame retardant in ABS / PVC mixtures of a zinc titanium (IV) oxide thus prepared yields products with good flame retardant properties, problems with the stability of the end product can occur during processing, especially when higher temperatures are used.
Preferably one fits. therefore, a zinc titanium (1) oxide having a 20 molar zinc titanium ratio of between 0.8 and 1.2 ', more in particular, a zinc titanium (IV) oxide containing up to 5% by weight of free zinc oxide is used.
The amount of component C can be very small. However, the actual amount depends on the composition of the molding composition and can be determined by a person skilled in the art on the basis of a few simple tests. In a preferred embodiment, 0.1-3.5 wt. parts based on 100 wt. parts (A + B), more particularly 0.2-2.0 wt. share.
Optionally, an iron compound or antimony compound, more in particular an oxide of these metals, can also be added to the flame arrester.
This iron compound can be added in the form of a compound with zinc titanium (IV) oxide such as (zinc-iron-titanium) oxide, or in the form of a ferric ferrocyanide, ferrous ferricyanide or "ferrocene." It is particularly surprising that The molding compositions according to the invention, in which very small amounts of flame retardant are incorporated with respect to the flame extinguishers which have hitherto been used, have such excellent flame-extinguishing properties It has been found that the oxygen index of the ABS / PVC mixtures by adding the component C (as flame arrestor) 790 4991 s -3- rises from about 22 to 34 and higher In the test according to UL 94, V-0 he can reach 1.6 on.
Als vinylchloridepolymeer past men liefst polyvinylchloride toe.Polyvinyl chloride is most preferably used as the vinyl chloride polymer.
In certain applications it may be advantageous to use copolymers of vinyl chloride with monomers such as ethylene and propylene.
In view of the chlorine content of the final molding material, it will be preferred that at least 75% by weight of vinyl chloride be present in the copolymers in order to achieve the required fire behavior.
The rubbery polymer used as the graft base for styrene and acrylonitrile is preferably a butadiene rubber such as polybutadiene, SBH and / or BAN, but other rubbers such as acrylate rubber or EPDM rubber can also be used.
In principle, any rubber on which the said monomers can be grafted can be used.
Als entmonomeren past men veelal styreen en acrylonitril toe.Styrene and acrylonitrile are often used as graft monomers.
Voor het verkrijgen van een beter warmtebestendig type kan men ook a -methylstyreen gebruiken in plaats van styreen. In order to obtain a better heat-resistant type, it is also possible to use α-methylstyrene instead of styrene.
In addition to component C, the molding composition usually also contains the usual additives, such as stabilizers, lubricants, dyes and the like.
More in particular, as a lubricant, a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate can be used, without significantly affecting the burning behavior. This is very surprising because these compounds generally have a very bad influence on the burning behavior of the end product.
The invention is now illustrated by means of examples.
