Abstract
Stopping compsn. for blast furnace tap holes comprises about 70-85% of a mineral consisting of a refractory clay, a high strength refractory aggregate and a material with a high carbon content, together with a polymerisable hydrocarbon binder obtd. from the distn. of crude petroleum oil and having a b.pt. of >200 degrees C, and a thermosetting resin which is stable at temps. of 200 degrees C and a hardener compsn. such that the onset of the curing reaction can be controlled to start at 130 degrees C. In contrast to known stopping agents, the present compsns. do not release noxious fumes in use. Suitable ingredients are non-paraffinic prods. obtd. from the distn. of crude oil, together with aminoplast resins, polyester resins, furan resins, epoxy resins, coumarone-indene resins, natural resins, phenolic resins, coal tar pitch, petroleum oil pitch etc.
