Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compounds with suppressed side reaction, by alkylating a naphthalene raw material containing naphthalene and/or a monoalkylnaphthalene with olefins using a silica alumina catalyst supporting a specific amount of zinc. CONSTITUTION:A naphthalene raw material containing naphthalene and/or a monoalkylnaphthalene having especially preferably a 1-4C alkyl group is alkylated with olefins (especially preferably propylene) in the presence of a silica alumina catalyst supporting 0.5-10wt.% zinc expressed in terms of metallic zinc (zinc may be supported as metal or a compound, such as a salt or oxide thereof) as a catalyst to afford the titled compounds, such as a raw material for naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, etc. The reaction is preferably carried out at 200-500 deg.C, 0.2-5/hr liquid flow rate and 0.5-3 molar ratio of olefins/ naphthalene rings under ordinary pressure-40kg/cm<2>.G. The catalyst life is long.
