Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert oxlenes containing ethylbenzene to other respective useful compounds, in high efficiency, by treating the raw materials with a specific catalyst derived from a silica source, an alumina source, an alkali source, and aliphatic carboxylic acids at specific ratios, in the presence of hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: A xylene mixture containing ethylbenzene is made to contact in the presence of hydrogen with a crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst obtained by the crystallization of an aqueous reaction mixture composed of a silica source, an alumina source, an alkali source and an aliphatic carboxylic acid or its derivative (A) wherein the molar ratios of SiO2/Al2O3 is 5W500, especially 5W200, H2O/SiO2 is 5W100, especially 10W50, OH-/SiO2 is 0.01W1.0, especially 0.02W0.8, and (A)/Al2O3 is 0.1W200, especially 0.5W100. The ethylbenzene is deethylated to benzene, and the oxylenes are highly isomerized to obtain useful compounds.
