Abstract

PURPOSE:To make uniform the high frequency discharge of a laser medium and prevent a decrease in laser output, by a constitution wherein the electrostatic capacity of a dielectric electrode with respect to a laser medium gradually decreases toward the downstream of a laser medium flow. CONSTITUTION:When a high frequency voltage is applied to metal electrodes 14a, 14b by a high frequency power source 10, high frequency voltage is applied to the outer hull 1a of a discharge tube 1 via an air layer 15. This in turn causes high frequency voltage to be applied to the inside of the hull 1a, that is, gas 11 in a discharge portion, to excite the gas 11 by high frequency discharging, providing laser oscillation between an output mirror and a rear mirror 8 and outputting laser via the output mirror. The thickness of the air layer 15 is adjusted by a dielectric electrode 16 consisting of the metal electrode 14a, 14b, air layer 15 and the outer hull 1a so as to make high frequency current uniform. This can keep impedance between electrodes 14a, 14b almost constant and uniform high frequency discharge by gas 11 is assured.
