Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a thin film type magnetic recording medium having excellent durability by laminating an underlying layer consisting of boron and hydrogen and having a specific thickness on a film and laminating a magnetic recording layer consisting of a ferromagnetic metal successively on this underlying layer. CONSTITUTION:The polyester film 1 is set so as to be moved from a raw film roll 3 of a vacuum treatment vessel 2 along the peripheral side face of a cylindrical can 4 and to be taken up on a take-up roll 5 in using a plasma CVD device. Gaseous B2H6 is then introduced at a prescribed flow rate into the treatment vessel 2 from a gas introducing pipe 6 mounted to said vessel and high-frequency electric power is impressed at a specified electric power density under the prescribed gaseous pressure to execute plasma CVD at, for example, 0.3m/min film feed speed, by which the underlying layer consisting of the boron and hydrogen is formed on the film 1. The film 1 formed with the underlying layer is in succession loaded into a vacuum deposition device, where a Co80Mi20 alloy is deposited by vacuum evaporation on the underlying layer to form a thin ferromagnetic metallic film layer 10 on the underlying B:HCVD film 11 having 50-2,000Angstrom thickness. The film is thereafter cut to a prescribed width and the magnetic tape is thus formed.
