At the time of detecting a sheet thickness deviation DELTAH of a rolled stock 1 by an inlet side sheet thickness gage 5, the decider 18 selects an optimum control gain value from the memories 16a-16c in accordance with the deviation DELTAH and performs feedforward control through an output timing circuit 8 and a draft control circuit 9. The control is stabilized and the control accuracy for sheet thickness is improved because an optimum control gain value is used in accordance with an inlet side sheet thickness deviation. Therefore, the product yield is improved.
