Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a silicon nitride sintered body having high strength and having thin surface-modified layer of obtd. sintered body which is usable as a bearing member as it is without requiring further working by combining a forced drying stage of powder which has been granulated, with a preliminary treating stage succeeding the forced drying stage, and a stage for capsule free HIP treatment. CONSTITUTION:Powder of a raw material silicon nitride which has been mixed with a sintering aid is pulverized and granulated, and the granulated powder mixture is molded after it is once dried forcibly. Obtd. molded body is then sintered preliminarily and subjected to hot isotropic pressing at 1500-1700 deg.C under >200atm and <500atm pressure in N2 atmosphere. A sintered body having >=80kg/mm<2> four-point bending strength at RT is obtd. by working the sintered body, if necessary. When the granulated powder body is sieved after adding water thereto after drying once the powder forcibly, more preferred result may be obtd. because a uniform powder body having a specified water content is obtd.
