Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having high heat-resistance, stability and strength and useful for electrical insulation material, etc., by reacting an equimolar mixture of a dihydric phenol and a dihalogenobenzenoid compound, etc., in tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide having high purity. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer having a reduced viscosity of >=0.35 (25 deg.C, in DMF, 1wt.%) is produced by reacting (A) an equimolar mixture of one or more kinds of dihydric phenols of formula I (Y is direct bond, 1-5C alkylene, etc.; R<1> and R<2> are CH3, C2R5, OCH3, OC2H5, etc.; n1 and n2 are 0-4) and one or more kinds of dihalogenobenzenoid compounds of formula II (X and X' are halogen; Z is SO2 or CO; R<3> and R<4> are CH3, C2H5, OCH3, OC2H5, etc.; n3 and n4 are 0-4) or (B) a halophenol of formula III (A is same as Y; R<5> and R<6> are same as R<1>; n5 and n6 are 0-4) in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate in tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide having a purity of >=99.97areal% determined by gas chromatography.
