Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the combustion performance by allowing jetted fuel to advance straightly and collide with the inner wall surface of a cavity at the top surface of a piston in the high load operation, while by changing the direction of advance of the jetted fuel by a swirl and avoiding the collision onto the inner wall surface in the low load operation. CONSTITUTION:As for a cavity 44 formed on the top surface of a piston 41, the inner peripheral wall surface 45 is formed into nearly conical form spread downwardly, and the bottom wall surface 46 is constituted of a four-leaves clover-shaped deep pan bottom wall part 46a and a shallow bottom wall surface part 46b having a nearly sector shape which is positioned between the contiguous bottom wall part 46a. A fuel injection valve 43 for jetting fuel F in all directions is arranged so that the shallow pan bottom wall part 46b is positioned on the injection axis line. In the high load operation of the engine, the jetted fuel is advanced straightly and allowed to collide with the shallow bottom wall part 46b, and in the low load operation, the swirl generated in combustion chamber 1 is strengthened, and the direction of advance is changed so that the jetted fuel does not collide with the shallow pan bottom wall part 46b.
