Abstract

PURPOSE: To permit satisfactory combustion within combustion chamber and reduce generation of suit by forming the piston top with a combustion chamber defined by an inlet projection and three inner side walls, two of these side walls having curved sectional profiles of different radii of curvature and the remaining one having a straight sectional profile.
CONSTITUTION: A piston 1 of a diesel engine is privded at its top 11 with a combustion chamber 2 having an inlet 22 and excentric with respect to the axis of the piston 1. The combustion chamber 2 has a top projection 23 with a CHANFURO C terminating in a lower side wall portion 21 of a curved sectional profile with a raduis R1 of curvature, which in turn terminates in a side wall portion 24 of a straight profile and terminating in a bottom wall with a radius R2 of curvature and having a central projection 26. Above the projection 26 a fuel injection nozzle 3 is provided on a cylinder head (not shown) such that fuel F injected from the nozzle 3 is directed toward the side wall 24 of the straight profile.
