Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively protect a circuit not resistant to an overcurrent by connecting a current limiting layer to a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) layer to form a protecting element.
CONSTITUTION: A circuit protecting element l includes a PTC layer 2 and a current control layer 3 thermally and electrically connected to the PTC layer 2. Hereby, even if overvoltage is applied to an associated circuit owing to any accident through electrodes 4a, 4b connected to the circuit, the layer 3 does not allow a current beyond a threshold to flow whereby a current flowing through the circuit is controlled to a value less than a saturation current from the first. Then, when temperature of the layer 3 rises beyond a predetermined value owing to energy corresponding to a product of the saturation current and the overvoltage, the resistance of the layer 2 is steeply increased to limit the current flowing through the circuit to a predetermined value. This arrangement assures effective protection of a circuit not resistant to an overcurrent.
