This soft error refers to a phenomenon in which, for example, falsified data stored in DRAM is inverted (11' → 10') and causes an error due to ultraviolet rays. The data in the error correction circuit (hereinafter referred to as ECC)
A method was adopted in which soft errors were corrected by periodically reading and writing data through a circuit (referred to as a circuit). FIG. 1 shows an example of a memory system to which a conventional error correction method is applied. That is, the contents (stored data) of the main memory device 1 consisting of DRAM are stored in the ROW (row) address 3 and COLUMN (column) specified by a central processing unit (CPU) not shown through the address line 2.

The data corrected by the ECC circuit 5 is sent to the CPU, and at the same time, the corrected data is written to the main storage device 1 through the ECC circuit 5. At this time, if the 1-bit error is a soft error, it will be completely corrected. This method of controlling the main storage device 10 is called a read-modify-write method.

Moreover, this address information includes all addresses in the main storage device 1. Other operations are the same as normal, and the contents of the main memory 1 (read data 100) are read based on the address information output by the refresh address counter 10.
The data is read out through the entire ECC circuit 5 to a CPU (not shown).
