PURPOSE:To manufacture inexpensively and simply a decorated article having superior metallic luster without deteriorating the fine appearance of the base material, by forming a very thin translucent metallic film on the surface of an article of glass or the like to be decorated by vacuum deposition or other method. CONSTITUTION:A translucent metallic film of <=500Angstrom thickness is formed on the surface of an article of glass, plastics, metal or the like to be decorated by vacuum deposition, sputtering, ionic plating or other methods while controlling the evaporation rate or the sputtering rate and the state of an evaporation source. The base material may be subjected to alumite forming treatment or undercoating before forming the metallic film. A decorated article having metallic surface luster and a wetting property is obtd. When the base material is transparent glass or the like, the interior of the article can be seen from the outside.
