PURPOSE:To cut off waste of heat energy, by equipping the apparatus with means for detecting moisture absorption and dew condensation of a photoreceptor and means for heat drying the photoreceptor, detecting this state of moisture absorption and dew condensation upon turning on the main power supply switch of the apparatus, and rendering the heat drying means unnecessary to maintain it always ready to operate. CONSTITUTION:A pair of electrodes 291, 292 are attached as a dew condensation sensor to an end face apart from an image forming region on the surface of a photosensitive drum 11, and a state of moisture absorption and dew condensation on the drum 11 surface is detected by measuring a resistance value between the electrodes 291, 292. The drum 11 is heat-dried with a drum heater 28. The resistance value RX indicated with the sensor 29 and an operation reference resistance value RO are compared in a comparation circuit C2, and when RX<RO, the drum 11 is heat- dried and the apparatus is kept unable to operate imaging until the durm 11 becomes usable, thus permitting the nonoperable state of the apparatus to be controlled automatically, and waste of energy to be avoided.
